They really need to get Peterson out of the rotation and back in AAA. He's killing them. He kills the bullpen and generally gets lit up.

Problem is, who do they go to? Eickhoff? I said on another site they should try to get Tropeano back who was just DFA. The need to try something though, Peterson just isn't getting it done.

I say keep him in this game for 8 innings. Just let him get hammered and don't waste the bullpen.

Wasn’t Peterson highly touted?

Had a good rookie season. Not sure if he was a highly rated prospect.
Yeah he was a really polished college arm the Mets drafted in the first round a few years back. He was one of those college arms that would move quickly. He was pretty highly-regarded but more as like a 3/4 or innings-eating five because his stuff wasn't/isn't great. His biggest problem is that he was always a command guy who didn't walk many (15 in 100 innings as a junior, a BB/9 generally around the low-twos in the minors) but now his command sucks. I think it's because he knows his stuff isn't good enough on its own to retire ML hitters so he pitches scared.

Sincere question: How is this not a setback?

This is really again why they need to acquire some help. Whether it be bargain bin, throw shit at the wall acquisitions like Tropeano (my suggestions) or trading for someone established, they need help at the back of that rotation. Peterson has been a disaster and Lucchesi not much better. With neither Carrasco not Syndergaard making any positive progress, they have to do something before it catches up with them.

The old saying is true, you can never have enough pitching.

Have they said anything about Lugo possibly starting? Gary Cohen said during a recent game that Lugo is a starter being used as a reliever or something to that effect.

That's always been an idea that people have thrown around, but the reality is he's been average as a starter and borderline elite as a reliever. So you might be able to use him in that starting role, but then you're relying on Trevor May who has been mediocre and Miguel Castro who has been great but is unpredictable to serve behind Familia as your setup men. It's a trade-off. I'd consider it as a last resort but would rather try some other options from the DFA or cheap trade line first and try to catch lightning in a bottle.

Yeah, good points. And I do remember now Lugo not impressing when he finally did get a few starts. I wasn't aware that May has been mediocre, been watching more playoff hockey than baseball so far this spring. It's just frustrating as a fan knowing (at least in a best case scenario) how good the rotation could be if/when Syndergaard and Carrasco come back. Also annoyed that they lost a game to the Orioles. I haven't done the research to fact check this, but I read the other day that the Mets have had the easiest schedule in baseball (or maybe just the NL?). The point is even with this roster they should beat Baltimore which is a crappy team and they need to beat the weak opponents. Atlanta is not going to stay at .500 forever.

Alonso said he doesn’t want pitchers throwing 99 mph at him without a solid grip on the ball, tar or not.

People complaining about pitchers using tar should really step back and understand that a lot of batters use tar/grip-enabling substances for their bats, and did so before a lot of pitchers adopted using tar.

Imagine complaining about pitchers having more control of the ball and preventing slippage and whatnot that could be dangerous. Frickin' boomer/old school mentality.

Alonso’s comment cracked me up. He went from saying pretty much this, to ending up saying basically we all know MLB f***s with the balls to keep our salaries down anyway.
