John Henry is going to cry. As a matter of fact, he's probably crying now and won't stop until next October. He'll probably tear down the Ted Williams statue and replace it with Big Papi.

I can get on board with a Big Papi farewell tour next season. Probably be more interesting than the games...

I know you thrive on negativity but if you really do think this team will stink I'd be happy to place a wager with you. Just let me know.

Gotta say, I am pretty surprised by this. I always got the feeling he was gonna hang on for as long as he possibly could. And he still had a pretty damn good year last year.

Depends on what they do to improve the rotation. And I don't thrive on negativity. I thrive on reality. And the reality is that team has been an abortion over the last couple of seasons. In fact, they've been terrible for 5 out of the last 6 years, with the one anomaly being the WS win in 2013.

Send him off with a ring. I would figure he would try and hang on for as long as possible. For a guy his age he hasn't declined much at all and could still come close to putting up 30 and 100 next year, he'll probably come closer to 25/85, but still I'll take it. I guess Hanley might stick around and then become the $22,000,000 DH in 2017?

Jose Fernandez on the block; cant blame them when his agent Scott Boras is trying to dictate how they handle him. Good for President of Marlins saying Boras will have nothing to do with this.

With the Tommy John surgery and Boras as an agent I'd stay away.

However, if I am the Marlins I come looking for a package that includes Moncada and Espinoza.

No. You love being negative. There's no need to deny it...its your thing.

But I didn't point it out as a knock...I was just trying to determine if you were really down on the Red Sox next season. Like I said, if you are, I'd be interested in a wager.

Given the talent we already gave up for Kimbrel, I see no need to use the trade market to acquire a top line starter. This team has plenty of money to spend...go sign a #1 (draft pick be damned). If a #2 is also available via UFA or isn't all that costly in the trade market, maybe that's an option. But Fernandez would be costly prospect-wise, so I don't see how that would make much sense to me.

Price won't cost prospects or a draft pick. Just a **** ton of money.

Red Sox have been awful the last 5 + years with the exception of 2013. I can understand some not being excited headed into next year, but, the team did look a lot better the last 2 months of the season last year. We are building a young core and if the Sox can add a start or two they'll be right in the playoff mix. Probably grab at least a wild card if not win the East, maybe win a round, but not favorites to make the WS. Still it will be kick in the right direction if the team were actually involved in some meaningful September baseball this year.

They looked a lot better without Ferrell. With him, not so good.

Last place 3 out of 4 years.

I'm not sure if DD being hired as President of baseball Ops had more of impact, players were probably like oh ***** its time to start playing or else I'll be out of job. But I agree they played better under Louvello and Farrell should have been fired.

That's fair. I just don't think John Farrell is a good Manager and his managing record shows that. Seems like a really good guy, but IMO he's just not good enough - maybe too nice a guy.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You say negative, I say brutally honest. Besides all that, what's there to be overly excited about? Their habitual last place finishes? Their stable of quality number 5 starters? I like the prospect pool/young players, but most of the young guys weren't used correctly by Farrell, and only came alive after he was diagnosed with cancer and was on leave.

I have never, ever gotten the infatuation by ownership with Farrell as manager...it's not like he lit the world on fire when he was in Toronto. I just don't think he is that great of a manager and his record speaks for itself. It's too bad because I liked him as a pitching coach but I can't imagine him going all Ruben Amaro Jr. on us and accept a demotion.

So with Ortiz retiring after this upcoming season, I really hope the Sox go HARD after Price.

[EDIT]

Forgot to list why Ortiz's retirement could be beneficial--16M now is coming off the books in the 2017 year.

We also need to replace Ortiz' big bat in the lineup.

Who will that be?

Move Hanley to DH and go hard after Cespedes to take over LF? Huge year in 2015 -- 35HR, 105RBI and great D that led to a 6.7 WAR. That's elite.

Go hard after Chris Davis? I worry about his consistency, but he might turn into a Batista, hitting big year after year.

Move Sandawful and go after Alex Gordon, to take over 3B from Sandawful?

Not much out there... but looking at KC and other contending teams like the Blue Jays... we seriously need some power/production upgrades.

Alex Gordon is one of the best OF's in the game (been a LF in KC, but I think he could play RF anywhere else as well), why would you sign him to take over 3B? (I know he's played there before, but he's in a much better position now)

Hanley isn't playing LF this upcoming season anyway. It really looks like it'll be Castillo-JBJ/Betts-JBJ/Betts. Or, they might have Gordon because apparently they've got "interest" (and as someone who's seen a fair amount of Royals games, I'd LOVE him on the Sox).

Bite the bullet for this year when it comes to the salaries, but make a HUGE offer to Price. HanRam goes to DH after this year, and then Shaw goes into 1B full time, after splitting time with 1B and 3B this year, or they acquire a different 1B in FA next offseason, or via trade.

Great point about Gordon -- I was only thinking putting him at 3B, because I'd prefer to keep Castillo/Betts/JBJ in OF, and replace Sandawful's bat (and awful D) at 3B. But you're right he's been playing in OF for KC.
