I don't know if it is a more butts in the seats thing so much as it's a "Jeter's defensive abilities have been greatly diminished but hey it's his last season" thing.

Jeter knows he doesn't have much left in the tank. If he has a good season,he goes out on top. If he struggles and/or battles injuries for a decent amount of time,nobody can say Jeter is retiring because he's a broken down old man. Jeter already made his decision. He had the foot injury in 2012 and last season.

Being professional, reserved and well spoken doesn't mean he doesnt have an ego.
The Yankees have been run as a tight-lipped corporate ship after Steinbrenner came back from suspension.
It took a megalomaniac like Arod to bring unwanted controversy back to the organization.
Gwynn, Ripken, Brett and Mattingly all announced their retirements either midway or at the end of their final season.
Gretzky did it before his final game. Leetch did it in the offseason after his final game. LT did it at the end if his final season and he was a crackhead degenerate.
On and on and on.
Jeter wants to be revered. For a guy who claims to be super private, he essentially increased the illumination of his spotlight (and subsequently, the entire team's) 1000-fold by announcing (how convenient) BEFORE spring training that hes calling it quits.
Yep. Hes sure as humble as they come.

Even Ewing and Messier didnt have farewell tours.
Ive been following the Yankees since 1976. I caught the tail end of Riveras farewell tour, and as much as i loved the guy, listening to the announcers was like nails on a chalkboard. I was actually happy i was in friggin Afghanistan for most of the season because it eliminated any chance i hear Michael Kay and John Sterling go on and on and on and on about Rivera.
Ego or no ego, Im glad he's retiring. More money off the books and a roster spot opens up.

95% of that stuff goes to charity, or stays with the team.
Like when Richter retired, and they gave him a full size goal coated in silver. It sits in the lobby of their practice facility.
Long shot, but i would love to see him put up 200 hits and take 5th all time on the hits list.
But he only needs 110 or so to take #6th from Yaz, which i think is completely possible if reasonably healthy.

while I can appreciate those that do not care for the tours, I look back at some of the greatest players ot have ever played the game and not only did they NOT get the proper send off, quite a few got kicked to the curb.
I appreciate this alot more than guys retiring during an off-season. Gives the fans in cities all over the country an opportunity to show their appreciation in a good way.
Booing an opposing player is showing proper appreciation for that player during a meaningless game.
Guys like Jeter get booed, but when they are hanging up the cletes, opposing fans that respect him as a human being, player and competitior should get the opportunity to pay the man the proper respect he deserves.
I'm happy we get this opportunity now. To many guys in this game in the past never got it.

Jeter has been a better Yankee than Ewing was as a Knick or Messier was as a Ranger.

Based on what metric? All three were franchise players, Hall of Famers and captains of their team.
20 years with the same team. 5 championships.
...just to name a couple.
You may never see another athlete like him in NY when it comes to longevity, winning, and how he carried himself on and off the field.
But Im glad the prospect of signing Stephen Drew is sending a shiver up your leg rather than having this season to appreciate what Jeter did here.

Every girl in every city he's tapped since 1995 go to his last game at every road city and, well.....makes you wonder if he's had more girls or more hits.
Were you this pissed off when Rivera, another great player and classy guy, announced his pending retirement before last season?
It just seems like such a weird argument in the first place, and thats without even getting into the bizarre **** about Jeter's ego.

I'm not "pissed" at the players as much as I'm dreading how the National Socialist YES network is going to treat it.
Again, announcing it in preseason seems pretentious.

I could be wrong but isn't it a common practice for top players in the sports to announce when their last season will be? And even if it wasn't Jeter has earned the right to announce his retirement whenever he wants. This coming from a Mets fan by the way.

I usually agree with you but this is just way off.
He deserves his 9 months of attention just the way Mo did. Not many players will repeat what he was able to do. 20 years with one organization. 5 championships. He is and always will be a rockstar idol. In the biggest market in baseball he carried himself with such class and integrity. He respected the game. I will always appreciate everything he did. He deserves to go out however he wants to.
