Marner went beast mode last night. He got of the snide real quick.

If that's the effort/results we get from him and Matthews we can beat anyone in a 7 game series. What a treat to watch.

We need Campbell on his game just as much if not more than those guys but yeah, if that happens we can beat anyone. The lack of playoff success has (for me anyway) put a damper on anything we've done in the regular season but it feels like all that is about to change. When I think of the way Marner played last night, I just get all warm and fuzzy all over.

Very very true. If we get early season Campbell in these playoffs ..... Yeah the league will be put on notice. Don't want to get too ahead of myself as this is still the Leafs, but last night was very reassuring. Game 2 will be a huge opportunity for this team. Hoping our big guns will continue to rise to the occasion

If you adjust for the 6% league wide increase in scoring, Marner scored at a pace of 100 points last season and 104 points this season. He's always been elite.
His production has dropped quite substantially in the playoffs for the last three years. How did you not understand that it's PLAYOFF production we're talking about?

The playoffs have started. It's a new season. Get with the program. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Exactly. The level of attention and shadowing you get in playoff games is a different level to season play.

Regular season is fun. But it means nothing if you can't take your game to the next level for post season.

We're talking about your comment that said:

"There is a HUGE difference in Marner this year. Many of us have commented on this over the last few months, he's playing by far the best hockey of his career"

And I said "If you adjust for the 6% league wide increase in scoring, Marner scored at a pace of 100 points last season and 104 points this season. He's always been elite."

You appear to be confused.

The Mitch Marner Hat Trick

:thumbu::thumbu:

Unless of course you're one of those guys who keeps going on about "expected" this and "expected" that and insists that the playoffs don't matter because it's all luck or small sample size or whatever, but I am not and will never be one of those guys myself.

I know I probably shouldn't be getting carried away but what the hell, when the playoffs start I always turn into a little kid who's a Maple Leaf fan before anything else anyway. Marner has been great in the regular season for years now, that's not news but now we're watching him transform into a PLAYOFF MONSTER and I am LOVING IT!!

No, you're confused. Break down this season into 2 sections, the first part where we was nothing all that special, and the second part right after he finally scored his first PP goal in a hundred games or whatever it was. Those were two completely different players.

I hope that helps. :)

So which is it? Are you talking about playoff performance or 1st half of regular season vs 2nd half of regular season? You are contradicting yourself :)

I'm getting concerned about you dude.

Now you've gone from saying "How did you not understand that it's PLAYOFF production we're talking about?"

to saying "Break down this season into 2 sections, the first part where we was nothing all that special, and the second part right after he finally scored his first PP goal in a hundred games or whatever it was."

Are we still talking about the playoffs? Dude you appear to have some very short term memory issues.

Yeah, he spent the summer going insane over Marner and then somehow out of the blue has decided that Marner has only been good for the last half season or so. It's really bizzare and actually concerning. I presume that it's just difficult for some people to admit when they are wrong on the Internet.

Depends on which post you're referring to. You're confusing yourself.

You either have serious reading comprehension issues or you're just pretending not to understand because you're not making any sense. Whatever.

Nope, what I said was that we should consider seeing what we could get for Marner as a better balanced team might be best, but that of course the only way I would consider trading him is if we got a TON back in return.

Do you understand the difference between saying "we should trade player X" and saying "we should consider trading player X if we could get the right return"?

No player should ever be consider untouchable, end of story.

Hey Gary, honestly, you're a good dude, it's not worth it. We agree Marner is great. The Leafs have won their first game one in quite a while. It's all good.

He's always been a lot more than "good". C'mon dude, seems like you're just trololololololing now.

Marner has always been a guy who consistently drove play in the playoffs, one of the best players in the league as it, and the only strikes against him remain PDO stats (the luck stats) as well as the bizarre over the glass penalties, which are unlucky much of the time as well. Its funny, after watching the Habs series last year, Marner and Matthews were way better than a guy like Danault (who had probably the worst playoff series of his career) and yet the narrative is still strange when I hear it that Danault was some kind of shutdown master that series (Hint: it was Price and poor finishing from the Leafs). I'm not sure Tampa has an answer for Toronto's big 2 if they are finally getting some bounces now. Maybe just try to outscore them and thats on Campbell to stay steady (he's really the most important player in the series).

In the end, I don't blame anyone for getting down on him though as end results are end results but you gotta have faith and it was awesome to see the crowd rallying behind him and the rest of the team and seeing the team absolutely feed off of it.

I still think the series is going 7 so get ready for the ups and downs including Marner probably having, gasp, a bad game or two against the 2 time champs. Going back to 2019 series, Marner now with 11 points his last 13 and Matthews with 14 in 13 while being the unluckiest top players in terms of shooting%.

I hope things keep trending to a normal average there. By the time it does, the Leafs will be holding the cup and Matthews/Marner will be sitting with 30-40 points each.

Lots of negativity today, big picture, Mitch has been our best forward first 2 games, he now has as many points this series as he had the entire series last four years. All over the ice, gritty play, winning pucks and being a real leader on the ice. Bodes well moving forward.

Any thoughts I had of trading him have evaporated.

Through two games he’s our MVP, plays all three situations and still produces

If there’s someone who can get the pp going this series, it’s him

He's been amazing! Last summer the idea of trading him to end up with a more balanced roster seemed like a reasonable idea worth exploring whereas now, I have no interest in trading him (though I'd always be willing to listen to offers). It's only been 2 games of course but the way he's played the last few months make me think that the odds of him dropping off now are near zero. He'll have bad games here and there just like everyone else but it really feels like him and Matthews have arrived as elite superstars in their prime. Sure hope we can win a cup with these guys or I probably won't see it happen in my lifetime.

Nice to see Marner stepping up. He is an elite player. That said, TB focusing on stopping Matthews opened up more room for MM. He did not disappoint. Unfortunately, TB would rather give MM more ice and shots than allow AM to fire away. Game 3, Keefe will be under pressure to somehow free up Matthews.
