The cap is projected to be rise to 92m. If he wants his percentage based on the $100m projected in subsequent years, he can GTFO. The goal is for his contract to be a bargain as the cap increases so they can add impact players, not washed up Jumbos and shitty Ritchies.

Like I'm actually bullish on the cap, but don't think we're seeing a 96+ mil cap until '26-27. The team absolutely should not be giving contracts for what the cap is likely going to be in a couple years. Especially if a player wants to sign mid season before we even have a confirmed cap next year

Marners getting a pay raise - and that's fine, the nature of the business of the league. But it needs to be grounded in reality

For me, I am going to start a thread on this board and instead of using the name Marner, I will just call him his cap hit and find 3 or 4 videos where can claim negative things about him, and recycle them endlessly on the board spamming every thread. That will learn him.

Exactly. I know they are silent boos, but I can assure you he is crying on the inside.
At the end of the day the blame has to fall to the GM. The player can ask for the world nobody is forcing the GM to give it to him. Silly to expect Mitch to run the team off ice as well as on. Well, if he is doing both maybe he deserves more afterall

Say it with me.. Stolarz is signed for two years. We aren’t losing him hahaha
In 2 years stolarz ask is going to be over $9 million if he achieves being a top five goalie.

I do not want to be tied up contractually with a stupid no movement clause to a kid who can't perform in the playoffs.

I don't give a flying f about anything he's done so far this year in the regular season and I will continue to not be amazed. He could score a million points in the regular season, but if he can't score one point in the playoffs, he is an absolute useless bag of pucks.

They give them out like candy, they are not going to keep Marner from getting one. Be real.
There should be a modified or limited NMC that kicks in at least half way through his contract. The number will be egregious enough, but this should be a take or leave caveat imo. Can't hand him the full NMC - have to set a precedent somewhere, imo. We need outs with this player he is not complete there are holes to his game, they don't appear until May.

The numbers you guys come up with to try and justify your takes are crazy. Stolarz is a good goalie. But he will never be a 9 million dollar goalie and if he is you let him walk. You have Woll who is 6 years younger and has similar numbers to him.

What’s with everyone thinking every player on the leafs is gonna get 9 million. Someone else said Matthew Knies will get 9 million as well. I love Knies but let’s be honest, he is not sniffing 9 million for another contract at least. He has not scored 40 points in the league, hasn’t even scored 20 in the league and people honestly think he’s going to get 9 million LOL. I’m the biggest leaf homer but he’s not even in the same convo as Boldy or Byfield yet. The leafs will have money to keep their young depth. But they gotta take gambles on young guys. I think they took a good one on Woll next up is Knies.

They will pay him with nmc lets be real

I think I saw a stat where like 75-80% of the NHL has some form of trade protection. It’s insane. You look at the NBA for example, two players have trade protection in the entire league. The two players who have it aren’t even superstars. None of the best players have trade protection.

To “steelman” the people saying hes going to get 9 million; perhaps in a roundabout way they are saying he has the skill set and drive to potentially be a 9 million dollar player some time in the future. I would agree with that. The reality is, as you have pointed out, short of the Leafs winning the cup and him winning the Conn Smythe, there’s no way in hell he's getting 9 million on his next contract.

Would trade Marner to Pitts for Crosby. Why? Because I wanna make sure we have cap to sign Stolarz and Crosby (a proven winner) and his level of compete would give ya another solid 3 years of value at a great price for your 2C.

Domi could fill Marner's role on the top line.

Stolarz is a bonafide top goalie. And I don't want to lose him because we locked into f***ing Marner of all people.
Not sure if this is serious or satire.

So you want to lose one of the best players in the world, because the only thing you care about is playoffs and you don't think he's been good enough, and yet you're advocating that we allocate 9m to Stolarz, who has saved a good but unspectacular 3.7 goals above expected through 13 regular season games, even though he has only played half of one playoff game where he was trash...

This thread would read a lot better if all the low end debates could be put to rest.

Normally I don't mind reading redundancies because it helps drive home a point. But it really struck me today how superfluous this conversation has become. Like nobody should be talking about the pucks over the glass or anything else that happened prior to the last year or two.

Just sum it all up under massive failure and move on.

Sadly I don't think people entrenching on their positions is gonna change anytime soon. It's become a war of attrition like WWI before the amnesty. Neither side is willing to give any concessions.

It's the same circular arguments with the same points of reference ending in the exact same stalemates.

Everything recycled like the plot of a James Bond novel. It's been eight years of regular season success followed by playoffs failure. How many more years of this crap does management think the greatest fans in the world will tolerate.

It's almost 2025 and nothing has changed.

Stolarz has never played a full season as a bonafide top goalie.

The talk re-signing both Marner and JT in November seems like a huge gamble to me. If they were re-up both and lost in round 1 again it would be incredible.

Especially if they give them both full NMC's again.

It really would he the worst thing that could happen to this team. I'm in the camp they should just let them both walk. Throw the money at a proven winner like Rantanen instead.

It's not change for the sake of change when there's actually good reason to be making it.

If the Leafs are paying any winger $14 mill AAV then it should be this guy.

Unfortunately, they already have a $10M+ winger and cap-wise that's all any team can really afford cap-wise if they plan on icing a championship team.

I wouldn't re-sign Marner or chase Rantanen. Tavares will take a big pay cut, freeing up ballpark $4-$6M on top of Marner's near $11M ($15M+ total). Knies' extension will eat up, say, $6M (just throwing numbers out here), which leaves somewhere around $8M-$10M (completely ignoring the cap increase for now) to get a 3rd line C, round out the bottom 6 with some veteran talent and have some cap space to play with at next year's TDL.

Losing Marner will hurt but the depth the Leafs can add will help immensely (PK specialist on the shopping list, for one). And they'll have enough cap to find a decent middle six RW for Tavares.

Of course this is all fantasy world talk as it's clear MLSE's biggest priority is not "just win" as Pelley tried to sell us, it's re-signing Mitch and secondly Tavares. That is it.
