Small sample size-and obviously a hot streak exaggerates-but Muffin Marner is on a 64 goal pace without Matthews. Makes you wonder if he’s a 40 goal man under the right circumstances. It does pierce this lame narrative that he can’t score, it reaffirms the idea that he defers, rather than an inability to score.

Yea, let's sign him now to 14M a year. Then they lay another egg in the playoffs. Great plan. We know he is a great player in the regular season. Score in the playoffs maybe for once.

The question is the playoffs. The regular season has never been a problem, we have seen this before. I hope he plays like this in the playoffs too, I really do.
50 points in 57 playoff games, most in games 1-4. 16 goal pace.

Some have short memories. As long as the PP is clicking he will put up good numbers because the PP goes through him and its hard for him not to get a point on every PPG. In the playoffs when they shut down the PP, he is an expensive Alex Kerfoot.

His deference has hurt him and this team then. Is a reasonable conclusion no?

If we could have got 40 goal 100 point Marner away from Matthews then this team was totally out of wack for the last 7 years.

That’s on coaching for not separating them. Do players create the lines? People are blaming the players for shit that’s on management. People cry about the contracts and get mad at the players. Who gave those players the contracts? Management. People cry about Marner forcing plays to Matthews. Who staples them together, coaching. Management and Coaching have been a big part of the problem. If we as fans can recognize these issues why have the people in charge been blind to them? That’s where our main source of anger and resentment should be directed.

Based on what I’ve seen with Matthews out, it’s clear as day he demands the puck at all times. Which is fair because he is an elite goal scorer but it’s to the detriment of the team. Thank God Berube has sense and will hopefully keep them separated.

Matthews should have the puck. That's why he should play with Knies and Domi.

Marner should have the puck. Play with JT.

Nylander should have the puck. He will get the short end of the stick but he will create on his own.

Only worry is Nylanders line at beat woll always be even, so Matthews and Marners line must won their matchups

If he needs more than $13.25M / year on his next deal you have to let him go. Simple as that. Because if he would leave his hometown team over a million or so dollars a year he's simply not serious about winning here (nevermind that he probably makes mid 6 or 7 figures more in endorsements per year here than anywhere else).

He's been fantastic for us this season and for most of his career but we've all seen the limitations with paying absolute top dollar for your core players and his own limitations in the playoffs where there's less time, less space and more pressure.

He'll be looking for a cap % that will be GT Nylanders and LT Matthews which is where he reasonably sits.
Rising cap will make that number look a little out of whack for sure.

Most fans don't think that way except for analytics nerds. The other issue is the optics of giving Marner more after making Matthews captain and the highest paid player in the league. Matthews re-signed a year ago, not two or three.
I don't know about 'analytics nerds' but I know fans don't but that's the unfortunate reality. Matthews will get his next raise on a bigger cap as well.
It's not an analytics thing.

Exactly, the same with William, he signed last year for 11,5 Marner is not entitled to make more over the next 7 years because the cap went up. Both are worth 11.5, if we are Mitch’s dream team, take a discount from that 11.5.and you can stay. Otherwise move to the U S or Winnipeg for that matter.
