The crease extends upward, its not just the ground. Stamkos clearly grabs the puck in the crease and throw its away, should have been an automatic penalty shot. Not sure how the refs missed that. Great save btw by Bishop.

I believe a player has to actually cover the puck on the ice for a penalty to be called. If it happens by the crease it's a penalty shot, if it happens in the defensive zone it is a regular penalty.

Grabbing the puck in air is still considered covering it, if he had just whacked it then it would have been ok, but he definitely grabbed it, moved it a bit then dropped it in another direction away from the net.

You are correct, it should have just been a minor if it was somewhere else on the ice.

67.2 Minor Penalty – Player - A player shall be permitted to CATCH the puck out of the air but must IMMEDIATELY PLACE IT or knock it down to the ice. If he CATCHES IT AND SKATES WITH IT, either to avoid a check or to gain a territorial advantage over his opponent, a minor penalty shall be assessed for “closing his hand on the puck”.
Anytime a player places his hand over the puck while it is ON THE ICE in order to conceal it from or prevent an opponent from playing the puck, a minor penalty shall be assessed for “closing his hand on the puck”. When this is done in his team’s goal crease area, a penalty shot shall be assessed (67.4) or a goal awarded (67.5).
A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who, while play is in progress, picks up the puck off the ice with his hand.

67.4 Penalty Shot - If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands FROM THE ICE in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team. See also Rule 63 – Delaying the Game.

The way I see this it looks like he immediately places it and does not skate with it, he is still in the act of stopping when he sets it down. The puck is in the air and not on the ice when he has his hand on it.

I would argue that he held the puck, especially since he changed the direction of the puck away from the net, but I guess it could have really went either way...close call.

What you are missing is that a player has to pick the puck up from the ice for it to be a penalty shot and players are allowed to catch the puck.

That is incorrect. Grabbing the puck in mid air in the crease should have been called a penalty shot.

Hang on. You read the rule, and then still tried to argue against it?

Read the rule, it says you are allowed to catch the puck and in the penalty shot section it says the puck would have to be covered or picked up off of the ice n

It was a clean play, he caught the puck and immediately put it down on the ice. Totally legal. If he covered the puck with his hand on the ice, then it would of been a penalty or penalty shot depending where he covered it.

Players do this all the time and I never ever see a penalty called. If Stamkos was called for it then that would have only been done because it happened in the goal crease. And if that did happen I would expect Cooper to be livid.
But just because the refs never call penalties doesn't mean they are right.

I see literally nothing wrong with this play. Guys catch the puck like this every game. Non issue. Close thread!

You're mistaken. Stamkos grabs the puck out of the air, and immediately puts it on the ice. Legal play.

Edit: And with the rule posted, we're done here.
