Detroit gets-

D Ryan Murphy

Carolina gets:

F Martin Frk

Detroit adds some extra defense depth while moving out a forward. Basically trading from a strength to help a weakness. Carolina would still have plenty of depth on D.

Pretty sure Carolina needs defensive depth, and Detroit doesn't. Carolina doesn't need another bottom six forward either.

Rather keep Frk, think he still has decent potential. We already have a similar player to Murphy in Sproul who will probably be on waivers.

I don't know that much about Frk, but don't see a need to do this from the Canes standpoint. We have a LOT of depth forwards, both on the team in and in the system.

I'm not high on Murphy, but the Canes have to expose 1 Defenseman, who is signed for next year and plays 35 games, in the expansion draft. Hainsey isn't signed for next year and Slavin, Hanifin and Pesce all are exempt. So that means Murphy or Faulk, and we know they aren't exposing Faulk. Yeah, I'm sure Francis has a plan b and even plan c if Murphy doesn't play 35 games, but the Canes will likely given Murphy every chance this year.

Depends how you define "defensive depth"

Faulk, Hainsey, Slavin, Pesce, Hanifin and Murphy at the NHL level.

Carrick, Fleury and McKeown knocking at the door..and Bean a couple years out. Expansion draft not withstanding, losing Murphy wouldn't hurt a whole lot.

Basically a Nestrasil type player. They got the real thing for free last year, don’t think Carolina or anyone would give up value for Frk (although he does look good)

This deal isn't a great deal for either side as you are essential trading a forward who looks like he could end up in the bottom 6 for a d man that looks like he will end up as a 3rd pairing / 7th d man. The hurricanes might have good defensive depth but they need a young player(especially wingers) that has top 6 potential and this forward will in all likelihood be a bottom 6 forward. Murphy does look like he will end up a 3rd pairing d man at best at this point however if I'm the hurricanes I'm more likely to move one of my d man that still has top 4 potential to try and get a young forward that has top 6 potential.

Frk is one of the guys they really need to finally give a shot at competing on a full time basis, could definitely help the club out.

Don't really know that much about Murphy.

How is Frk's skating? I haven't seen him in a while, but his skating looked "labored" when I've seen him previously.
