Mikkola Hit on Girgensons. Given 5 mins and game misconduct (fined $5000)

I've never considered Mikkola as a dirty player. Of course, all NHL players are doing things that are a little beyond the pale, but he's not the type of guy who normally does things like this. While I think he fully deserved the major and game misconduct he got for this, it's weird that it was him of all people to do it. I think he should get a game for it, but only one, since he's not someone who regularly does this kind of stuff.

The playoffs are supposed to be rougher than the regular season. But that hit is not good hockey. That was dumb and dangerous. Girgensons was already down and facing the boards.

A suspension is the right call.

What's up with the Panthers headhunting and trying to injure all game long? They must be lowkey one of the dirtiest teams in the league, and I don't even like TBL.
Lowkey? I don't think there's anything low key about what they're trying to do here in this series.

No, you sure as shit don't. The puck was completely out of Girgensons reach. There was no possible way for Girgensons to make any sort of play here. There was zero reason for Mikkola to go for a hit here, it served no purpose at all, especially since the opponent was not in a postion to be hit, which is the first step you have to take into consideration before making a hit in the first place.

If Mikkola was oh so interested in keeping Girgensons from making a play (again, not that there was any possibility he could have) there were different means to achieve that. Means which didn't come with the risk of taking a penalty. This was an utterly stupid play which could have cost his own team dearly. He can consider himself to be very lucky Tampa didn't put the game away during the powerplay.
It's not much more than a nothing push and more downwards than against the boards. Not nice but not an attempted murder like some here seem to think.

I agree it's stupid to take a penalty there but the right thing to do is make sure the guy is not going to make a play. He's not getting away with the puck but he might make a play.

I'm not going to speculate if Mikkola knew whether Girgensons had the puck or not. He did what he did and he got penalized. He might get a game but I doubt it.

I think if you want to see any action from the league you need to send in videos of guys flipping pucks in warmup. Headshots in games are all good.

He was trying to pin him against the wall to make sure he couldn’t still try to make a pass, I don’t think the head smoosh was intended.
Idk, if mikkola would’ve come in with the malicious intention that many are attributing to him, Girgensons would’ve been hurt far beyond a butterfly bandage from a little visor cut. Dumb play/hit, and a correctly called penalty/ejection afterwards. Maybe he’ll get another game, although I wouldn’t be surprised if a 5 and the game was deemed adequate punishment.

I guess we’ll finally see if the league listens to the crybabies that scream and cry that Florida destroys their team.
Weren't you crying because Barkov got hit in the chest ? lol

That's by far the dirtiest hit of the playoffs. Kadri got suspended for 2 entire series for making almost the exact same hit. But of course you would post something like this.

It's Mikkola, so I don't think he intended the head smash either. He's one of the players in the NHL I give the benefit of the doubt to on attempting to judge intention. Doesn't change what he did, as occasionally even players who play a pretty clean game do something idiotic. I'm not really sure what he was trying to accomplish in doing what he did, but by no means do I believe he intended for it to end up the way that it did.

You’re going to be screaming and crying in 1 week so lmao. Hagel’s hit was way worse and Barkov is the cleanest player in the league. Hagel is a little munchkin and got creamed because he can’t keep his head up. Oh well.
