Mikko Rantanen breaks the single season record for most empty net points

Player trusted to always be on the ice when team is holding onto a lead gets empty net points. Go figure.
Exactly. People always criticize these players for getting these, but there's skill and a responsibility involved in getting them. If it was easy to do, each team would have a guy with 15.

You know what, I do think this is interesting and will be watching Rantanen's career in Dallas with great interest.
Hmm...heard that one before somewhere...

And it's usually what happens when you get traded to two teams in season one of which isn't a high octane offence in Carolina. How many of rantanens empty net points was MacKinnon apart of? At least 80 percent. MacKinnon hasn't exactly been a dynamo since rantanens left

9G, 30 Points in 22 games since that trade and the Avs are 15-6-1 in those 22 Games... That's also the most points in the league since the trade.

I'd say he's doing just fine

I think this is a record that will keep getting broken due to analytics saying it is smart to pull the goalie earlier and when you are down by more goals

Rantanen has 6 straight post seasons with at least 10 points.

I wonder how many players have done that since the end of the 80s?

Not sure why the negativity on this thread. He's not wrong. Rantanen was carried by Mac and Mak. That contract will end up an untradable albatros in a couple years, he's Huberdeau only 3 inches taller.
I think people disregard the observations of Avs fans who saw first hand on a regular basis over the last handful of years what his strengths and deficiencies are. Rants has elite skill in scoring. He used to be a more dominant and impactful player through the SC season. Now his play has fallen off because IMO he went from being a high effort to low effort player. it’s a matter of how he is being deployed now and he’s trying too hard and has had some bad luck. But he’s still a PPG player or should be. The only question is whether this whole debacle will wake Rants up and motivate him to consistently play at his highest level that he’s clearly capable of? I think it will. Rants has something to prove as a player to his detractors and will be no less motivated than when he chased and won the Cup.

So with a secondary assist on a empty net goal against Minnesota Mikko Rantanen was able to break Nikita Kucherov's single season empty net points record by collecting his 15th empty net point of the season: NHL Stats

Rantanen has just 75 points this season so scoring 15 empty net points is really ridiculous. When Kucherov put up 14 empty net points he had a very respectable 144 points and won the Art Ross. Rantanen on the other hand has been spiraling out of control after being traded from Colorado and has just 11 points in 21 games after the trade. Take MacKinnon and Makar away and Rantanen is just a borderline top 6 player on pace for 15+27=42 points over a full 82 game regular season. If things continue like this Rantanen can forget about making the Hall of fame.

Ah hell ya- ma! Ma! New Mulletman take, it’s a good’un!

And that original title- glorious.

This isn't like you, Mulletman.

I would have expected a thread title like "Rantanen wins the Kucherov Memorial Trophy" or some such.

You've changed, man. You've changed.
