Saw this article about Mike van Ryn today:

Obviously there are many factors in play for the Leafs' embarrassing play other than Mike van Ryn, but interesting downturn nevertheless, despite Leafs' position in the upper half of the standings.

It's likely a combination of him and personnel.

That being said...Van Ryn has left STL...are their stats better since he left? I guess Binnington is doing better on an individual level this year.

Didn’t STL just fire their coach?

Klingberg
benoit
lajoie
lageson
timmons
gio
and dare I say Brodie

and people really want to blame the D coach…….

I get what you’re saying but it’s not like we’ve only been bad because our guys aren’t good enough. Defensive structure can be taught and we’ve looked bad all year in this regard. It’s obviously both imo

So who was the D coach before and how do we get him back.

This actually seems scandalous.

Our previous defence coach is still here but now only runs the PK. They changed up the D coaches when they didn't need too. It was working

Personnel is a really big factor in the chances were allowing. We upgraded scoring, downgraded defensive play

Yes Van Ryn is purposely telling TJ Brodie to age and forget how to play hockey.

"Embarrassing play" seems like an exaggeration since they're in the top ten in points percentage and middle-of-the-pack in Goals Against.

Obviously there's room for improvement defensively, but imagine being a fan of a team like SJ or CHI if you think TOR's play is embarrassing.

Lagesson and Benoit have been great...

The second point is poor considering they're rebuilding and we are.....not?

How do you let other teams just go by you especially behind the net. Leafs do a shit job of keeping opposition forwards to the outside.

its the system or personnel or both?

Random comment but Real Sports has a ton of Mike Van Ryn pro stock sticks which I thought was a bit of a funny throw back to the dark days of 2008-09...

Don't know much about Van Ryn as a coaching mind but it's not exactly like Samsonov has been a stable inert goalie for some of those GAA stats. The roster isn't exactly high end. The team isn't exactly doing badly in the standings. So I think we have to wait and see before confirming the scapegoat here. He could be the problem, but the D looks like it's weathering the storm, duct tape holding everything together for now...

Pitting full season totals against in-season totals will always make for a bit of a wonky comparison. Furthermore, defensive totals are only part of an overall picture. I don't necessarily disagree that improvement will be necessary though going forward.
