ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan ice hockey head coach Red Berenson announced that former Wolverine defenseman Mike Komisarek will join the coaching staff as an undergraduate student assistant.

Komisarek played two seasons at Michigan (2000-02) before embarking on an 11-year NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and most recently the Carolina Hurricanes in 2013-14. Komisarek retired from professional hockey this summer, and decided to return to the University of Michigan to complete his undergraduate degree through the athletic department's Degree Completion Program.

So long Komi you traitorous *%^*.

Never forgave our 'future captain' for jumping ship to the Leafs for a couple extra bucks.

he was such a beast when with the Habs and one of my fave players. he was future captain material they said, he was a rock defensively too, then Lucic happened. he then subsequently had a braincramp and went to play for the leafs, the rest is history as they say. glad we had him for his best years but he was never the same after the
Lucic beatdown and he never played with a dman of markov's caliber either. Even at that, go f yourself you effin traitor and good luck in your next career....

Couple of extra bucks? He got paid 4.5M a year by Burke. I don't know what the Habs offer was but it was certainly less than that. Surely you cannot blame a guy for securing his future.

Habs offered him 4 :shakehead for the same term if I'm not mistaken.

This was after his play dropped off significantly after the Lucic beatdown/injury.

Anyway bygones will be bygones.

Did he not suck, and was all Markov?

Komi was good in his own right before he took that vicious pounding from Lucic/screwed up his shoulder at the same time.

He was a beast running around laying people out all over the place...played with a lot of confidence.

After he came back from his injury he wasn't the same player....MUCH worse with the
puck...played a more timid style.

Never understood why *he* was the one hab out of all the habs who jumped ships over the year that gets the worst of it. Everyone knows there was massive bad vibes in MTL after that 2008-2009 season, and there's a reason everyone dipped pretty quickly. It's entirely possible that an extra $500 000 isn't what pushed Komisarek to sign with the Leafs. In fact, it's probable.

Honestly, he seemed like one of the nicest guys in the game. I really, really wanted him to be better than he is just because he seemed so ****ing nice.

beginning of the end when he jumped ship to play for the leafs. yea he might have made 500k/yr more over a couple years but that move shortened his career quite a bit IMO. anyways...

Man, that season when the Leafs had Beauchemin, Phaneuf, Kaberle and Komisarek on the blue line. HF would've gone nuts if that defense core was on the same team just a few seasons earlier.

I remember Carbonneau saying (as a panelist after he was no longer the coach) that Montreal was offering around 3.5m a year.

No idea what happened to the guy. He did seem to sort of come back and slowly play better when carlyle took over the tean. Unfortunely hiz grave was already dug at that point and became a healthy scratch regularly. His career could have possibly been salvaged at that point but leafs management (rightfully so) moved on before giving him another chance. I think his skating was the death of him

No kidding, circa 2007 or 2008 that's one of the best top 4's in the NHL.

He benefited a lot from playing with Markov but there was no denying he was a punishing defenseman in his own right for a few years with the Canadiens.

I always liked him as a person and I wish him well.
