First offseason roster move is a resigning rather than a re-signing. Booo.

Maybe one of the guys we have wants his "own guy" and that is part of the negotiations for a new contract?

Edit: It's too bad, I thought he did great with the two guys we had this past year.
"The team will immediately begin its search for a new goaltending coach."

Doesn't seem like a statement with a guy in mind, but hopefully.

By saying he resigned, I assume that means he was still under contract?

More money? Not meshing with front office? Off-ice personal issues? Wants bigger opportunity? What minjaben said?

Interesting to see if more comes out of this.

also could be that we are planning to target one of the bigger names in FA, and are going to come with an added selling point that whoever comes in can bring in their own personal coach.

Given how Mrazek played this year, and how Ned probably deserves his shot, I'm not sure I would actually prefer that next year.

"One of the bigger names" boils down to Bobrovsky. I'd be surprised if he isn't headed down to Florida. I don't see much of a difference in potential between Lehner and Mrazek.

Perhaps the plan for Bales was always for him to mentor Darling. Bales made his name coaching up MA Fleury (6'2") and Matt Murray (6'4"). Now that the Canes goaltending duo looks like it may be two smaller guys in Mrazek and Nedeljkovic they could look for a more specialized coach in smaller tenders.

This is my thought. He was great with Mac and Mrazek, but he was initially brought in to be Darlings guy, so if one of the other goalies wants their guy running things Mike moves on.

Since he’s walking away from a contract this smells a little, unless he’s locked into a long term contract that pays poo and after a year like he just had he has much improved value and merely wishes to capitalize.

If you guys are right about management wanting their own guy and this was a Peters “firing not firing” then it still smells a little. Couldn’t ask someone to do a better job....

Steve Smith did the same thing last year. He really turned around that Buffalo D......

I doubt he's being underpaid now...his contract was negotiated by Francis and Friends. He might be paid more than Rod for all we know. To me, this looks like either another opportunity with a goalie he knows is available and he has reason to believe that he'd be asked to move on in the near future, or a personal situation. A "strike while the iron is hot" type of opportunity. If that wasn't the case, just let the organization fire you and keep getting paid or stay if they still want you.

Or... maybe we don't know shit about what's going on, and much like everything we should have done about this team last offseason, maybe its better to sit back and watch it play out rather than assume everything is about to go tits up all the time?

But it's offseason. What fun would that be to just sit back and watch things play out?

Oh, I mean there's a few things to discuss....

STM select-a-seat is this week, the draft is rapidly approaching, the first stage of what will likely be a multi-year process to renovate the arena has begun with the replacement of the scoreboard, Canes Open House is in a couple weeks, we're going to be unveiling a new road uniform that has potential to effectively rebrand the franchise, and we just made it to the ECF after missing the playoffs for 9 straight years. I mean, there's a lot going in a positive direction with this franchise to continue to get roped into the "why is the sky falling today" comments we tend to see.

Most of that (select-a-seat, scoreboard, open house) is just boring stuff and not really much to talk about. Clearly the draft will be a big discussion though.

I guess I don't see a "Why is the sky falling" comment. I see people speculating about why a coach resigned and coming up with possible reasons. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

I agree though, we will need to let it play out as none of us know (except for me, as I'm Elliott Friedman)
