I'm aware the rankings are for this season, hence my Maryland and Rutgers references. Sorry, but not being behind against unranked opponents does not vault you in the rankings. Being unbeaten doesn't necessarily, either. By that logic Coastal Carolina should be ranked ahead of Penn State and OSU.
Honest question, if UM played OSU next weekend with UM favored (as you seem to think they should be), would you be comfortable dropping a $500.00 bet on UM? I would with OSU.
I disagree that thats how the rankings should work though, it wasnt clear what you thought the rankings were about when you brought up the last 20 years in the conversation. Bringing up coastal Carolina is also not a fair comparison. I think everyone can agree being undefeated in the big ten vs the sun belt makes a difference. Despite thatdifference in strength of schedule, Coastal Carolina isnt very far behind in the rankings though.
Right now, with an easier schedule OSU is ranked higher with a loss on their record. If youre fine with rankings like that then so be it but you can only play he games ahead of you. I think right now the game would be a coin flip, wouldnt want to bet 500 bucks on it given history but that history is irrelevant. Let Ohio State win that game and they can jump in the rankings, thats how it should work.
I have a feeling if we werent talking Michigan vs Ohio State and it was 2 random teams you wouldnt feel the same way. Undefeated team who hasnt had a lead for like 5 mins half way through the year with a harder schedule vs a team with a loss and an easier schedule.... which team should be ahead in the rankings?
The disconnect is over the true identity of college football rankings.
You're assuming that they are intended to reflect who the best / most talented team is at the moment.
In reality, they are a small portion record, a small portion schedule, and a large portion television ratings. (Just like the bowl invitations.)
Completely agree with this.
Lions lose another in the most Lions way possible. Going for 2 and taking the lead was a great call. Being a Lions fan I knew not to celebrate because the Lions are a bewitched team. Brings back memories of that game they lost against the Vikings because they failed to execute the extra point during the final play of the game.
Lol only team in history to lose 2 games on last minute 50+ yard field goals and we're 5 games in. It is the most Lions record ever. Either way, another competitive game that they lose last minuteand doesnt hurt their draft stock. I would hate if they won that one game and its the tie breaker Minnesota gets to pick 1st overall over the Lions.
A very Pistons-esque tank right now.
