I am a guy who said I would kill for a Hyman on every line. That said, in a flat cap world, his contract doesn't make sense for us. Bunting is pacing for 21 goals and 50 points. Hyman's career highs for us were 21 goals and 41 points. Yes he had times he paced better but he rarely finished a season, which is an issue. Hyman's production this year is largely PP based. Bunting is besting him in most areas.

Consider that we have Bunting, Kase, Kampf, Campbell and almost Spezza for the cost of Hyman. That's a guy meeting Hyman's input, a Vezina running goalie, 2/3 of one of the top 3rd lines in hockey and one of the top 4th liners. Depth is hugely important. Likewise, one team is near the top of most important categories while the other looks to be playing "outscore your problems".

Bunting is now second overall on the rookie list. Last time we had anyone on that top ten list is when Matthews, Marner and Willie were all rookies. I'd love it if Bunting can pass that Raymond guy, and now that Matthews and Marner are turning into their super selves, Bunting will get a lot of points also.

All he sees is money signs! Amazing that we got him for two years rather than one. He is definitely going to regret that going into next year.

Hyman-lite player. Or maybe better than Hyman. Very happy we have him

It's a blessing if he wants to stay here, gives us a chance to move some $$ around and ideally add a couple of million to the salary cap.

Hyman 1st two years was not the Hyman he is now. People forget how awkward he was.
Hyman kinda sucked, actually. Then he some how remembered he was Marian Hossa. But Bunting is very nearly as good this year… at under a million bucks. Waaaay ahead of Hyman at the same age or GP…..

Doubtful anyone was going to offer him more, or put in in a better position to succeed. This was the best decision of his life.

I was a Hyman fan before it was cool but the Team is much better off with Bunting in his spot.
Kid just continues to impress. That 3 foot pass he made to Marner on Matthews 2nd goal really highlighted the hands on him. Hyman couldn't have made that play.

Apparently Bunting was one of Marners least favourite guys to play against in junior. Would stick him at every opportunity

Yeah, a little puzzling that he wouldn't have signed just one year.
I'm betting this was a negotiation where Dubas didn't cave and did a take it or leave it approach.

Great signing.

Micheal Bunting was turning 26 years old and had played a total of 26 NHL games over 7 seasons since being drafted and has a total of 14 NHL points to his name total.

To me that is anything but certain to have an NHL career.

So taking 2 years at $950K ($1.9 mil) nearly $2 million guaranteed would be a no brainer for him, as the risk would have been with the Leafs organization on a guaranteed contract as he had no bargaining power. He was coming off a 2 year 2 way contract that was paying him $100k & $150k to play in the AHL mainly a season.

Case in point: Leafs signed Mike Amadio also a career minor leaguer who also was from Sault Ste Marie, and drafted in the 3rd round of 2014, compared to 4th round for Bunting of that draft class. He had played 174 NHL games 16 goals 24 assists 40 points. He was far more proven as an NHL player than Bunting at time of signing. The year prior the Leafs had signed Travis Boyd who had similar NHL numbers to Amadio and we have seen how fast they come and go from the organization..

There are dozen upon dozens of AHLers out there with similar stats and story lines as its all about opportunity. Having the benefit of tossing him on a line with 2 X $11 mil players has its advantages to make sure your depth signing works out. :)

PS. That is not said to take anything away from Bunting who has played great and is a good addition, but he is an exception to the rule and not the norm as far as normal outcomes like this league wide.

I'd argue you can't just throw anyone on that line, aka Thornton and whatever scrubs they have tried up there. I don't recall them trying Boyd or Amadio up there either. So he's proven to at the minimum be a better fit up there, or maybe better than those other scrubs.

Bunting is 26 years old. At that age, Hyman was our #1 PKer and scored 40 points without PP time. Bunting might be his offensive equal, but that was the weakest part of Hyman's game.

Bunting at his contract is much better value than Hyman at his contract, but he's got a long way to go before he matches Hyman's impact.

Agreed we have a brilliant GM.
