Hello, all,

A guy still owes me money for season tickets for a few years ago. He has offered to pay me with Memorabilia. Some he got at a casino night and one does come with a certificate of authenticity. Since I know people value their goods much higher than they are probably worth, what would be a good resource to research what he is offering me? Besides Ebay and Craigslist, are there places that could give me estimates? Since I don't have the actual stuff, just photos from the guy, I am looking for a good starting point.

Are you looking to sell and get the cash? EBay and Craigslist are not good as most of the stuff posted on there is fake. If it is a big-ticket item, look at Steiner and you can likely get about 1/4 of what they are charging. If it is something you would want to keep for yourself, I would consider about 1/3 to 1/2 of what Steiner is charging. Especially considering they are constantly having sales and deals so you never have to pay full price. If he tries to tell you that he paid much more, just say, "Just because you got ripped off, doesn't mean I have to." If he still budges, tell him to sell the item himself and give you the cash he gets and keep the left-over for himself. I have bought and sold a lot of memorabilia. If you want, pm me a description of the item and I can try to give you an idea of the value.

Unless you are looking to flip the merchandise I'd go by what it's worth to you. I mean if you want cash then why don't you have the guy sell the stuff and give you the money? Perhaps if you tell us what he's offering you we can give you some estimates.

Take the cash instead. If he has to sell some of his stuff to come up with the cash, that's his problem.

Certificates of Authenticity literally aren't worth the paper they're printed on unless they come from Steiner Sports, etc.

Look at it this way. If what he was offering you was really worth what he claimed he'd sell it and not try to sucker you into taking it. It makes no difference what "XXX" autograph is really worth if it's a fake.

I too am leary of people valuing their merchandise. I've watched enough Pawn Stars to know if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I too would prefer cash, but I probably error-ed back in 2010 by not cutting him off.

A 94 Stanley Cup jersey signed by Adam Graves
A Mark Messier Oilers Jersey with the Oilers cups and retirement patch - Autographed.
A Mitchell and Ness Rangers Jersey signed by Mullen, Anderson and Pete stemkowsky (said he got them at one of the Casino nights).

All the items are nicely framed. I will try to post pictures.

Agreed. Plus, signed jerseys can be VERY hard to sell as most people have a finite amount of wall-space for items and these take up a lot of space. Secondly, the cost. The frame Graves might fetch $250 in NY, but you can get other signed Graves items for much cheaper.

A friend of mine who also sells memorabilia got a good deal on a few framed jerseys years ago. He said, "I carried those things around like a cross from show to show." He finally sold them for a VERY small profit.

I would say give him maybe $300 in credit towards what he owes you, but understand it may take you a very long time to sell the items if that is what you plan to do.
