It feels to me like this season has been characterized by a lack of really intriguing down-to-the-wire races. The playoff bubbles popped early, some playoff matchups were effectively locked in by the end of March, and several teams have not played a meaningful game in weeks. It’s been a weird year for regular season drama.

That said, there are still a few high-profile games left. Note that this is from the lens of playoff relevance, so you’ll need to add your own spotlight to farewell games, TDL return games, etc.

Edit: I’m leaving this post intact, but scroll down for updates as results impact the schedule.

4/13
Blue Jackets @ Capitals
- Columbus needs a miracle, and the hardest obstacle might be to win this game in Washington. If they lose, the Eastern bracket is almost entirely set.

Oilers @ Jets - Edmonton’s only got a slim shot at taking home ice in their upcoming series against the Kings, and they must win this game to have a shot at all.

4/14
Kings @ Oilers
- Assuming Edmonton wins in Winnipeg the previous night, if they win this game they will pull neck-and-neck with the Kings for home ice. In any case, this game is a playoff tone-setter.

Blackhawks @ Canadiens - It would take a miracle for Columbus to catch Montreal. The easiest way for the Habs to clinch would be to simply win this layup of a home game.

4/15
Panthers @ Lightning
- Maybe the most meaningful game left on the schedule as it will go a long way to deciding home ice advantage in their upcoming in-state rivalry series.

Utah @ Blues - (WC Bubble Part 1) Blues and Wild are jockeying for the right to play Vegas instead of Winnipeg. This is one of two games played simultaneously which will determine the 1v8 and 2v7 matchups.

Ducks @ Wild - (WC Bubble Part 2) This is the other game which will be played at the same time as Utah/StL. Of the two, this one involves the bigger potential choke job.

4/16
Oilers @ Sharks
- In the unlikely scenario where Edmonton beats Winnipeg and LA back to back, and LA loses in Seattle, the Oilers will be rewarded with a nearly automatic win for home ice. Otherwise this game is meaningless.

4/17
Flames @ Kings
- This is Calgary’s game in hand on Minnesota and St Louis, who will have finished their schedules by then, and also the final game of the entire regular season. This could potentially also be LA’s shot at clinching home ice against Edmonton. Tonight’s games in progress will shed some light on whether this one could be a play-in for the Flames.

Certain other games could become important in unlikely scenarios, such as Toronto or Vegas going winless down the stretch to endanger their division titles.

Flames didn't get the help they needed today, Wild win in regulation. Clinching scenarios:

Wild-1 point vs Anaheim. If they lose, they get in with any Flames loss
Blues-regulation win vs Utah. If they lose in regulation, they qualify if Calgary earns less than 5 points in their next 3 games. If they lose in OT, the Flames must win all 3 games in regulation.

The Flames play San Jose, and then Vegas and LA who are resting everyone, so winning out is possible, not sure how likely it is Minny or St. Louis lose, though Utah has been playing well.

Update:

Jackets, Oilers, Flames all won their must-wins.

Upcoming meaningful games:

4/14
Kings @ Oilers
- If they win this game the Oilers will pull neck-and-neck with the Kings for home ice. In any case, this game is a playoff tone-setter and one of the most important left on the calendar.

Blackhawks @ Canadiens - It would take a miracle for Columbus to catch Montreal. The easiest way for the Habs to clinch would be to simply win this layup of a home game.

Rangers @ Panthers - This should be a win for Florida, but crucial for making the following day’s rivalry showdown a meaningful one.

Golden Knights @ Flames - (WC Bubble Part 3) Puck drops one hour after the other two WC bubble games begin, so by the 3rd period the Flames will be aware of whether they can pull into striking distance with a win. Vegas has nothing to play for other than home ice in a hypothetical 3rd round series against Dallas, so they may be resting players.

This could potentially also be LA’s shot at clinching home ice over Edmonton. It could also be meaningless, depending on the results of prior games.

Certain other games could potentially become interesting depending on results, e.g. Columbus’ schedule becomes much more interesting if the Habs blow their game against Chicago.

Update:

In contrast to last night the Panthers, Habs, and Oilers all left crucial points on the table.

Upcoming meaningful games:

4/15
Panthers @ Lightning
- Would have been a massively important game for home ice, had Florida not choked their game against the Rangers. Now it’s just a meat-grinder game to soften each other up for their series, but still worth watching. Tampa will play for a faint chance at the division title.

Maple Leafs @ Sabres - Again, the chances of Toronto blowing the division are faint. But if Tampa beats Florida, this game starts to take on some relevance.

Blue Jackets @ Flyers - Columbus still has a flicker of playoff hope. If they win this game, things get interesting.

Utah @ Blues - (WC Bubble Part 1) Blues and Wild are jockeying for the right to play Vegas instead of Winnipeg. This is one of two games with simultaneous puck drops which will help determine the 1v8 and 2v7 matchups.

Ducks @ Wild - (WC Bubble Part 2) This is the other game which will be played at the same time as Utah/StL. Of the two, this one involves the bigger potential choke job.

4/16
Hurricanes @ Canadiens
- A lot hinges on CBJ@PHI the prior night. If the Jackets win that one, buckle up. Suddenly this becomes a must-win for Montreal.

4/17
Islanders @ Blue Jackets -
A couple of other things have to fall into place, but this could potentially be a play-in game for Columbus.

Flames @ Kings - This is Calgary’s game in hand on Minnesota and St Louis, who will have finished their schedules by then, and also the final game of the entire regular season. It could be meaningless, depending on the results of prior games.

The Blues and Wild haven't secured a playoff spot yet. The Blues can clinch with a regulation win. The Wild need one point to clinch a spot.

I wonder what the hockey gods are cooking up when it comes to Montreal and Columbus. Lots of interesting stuff there.

If Michkov has a good game and wins the game for Philadelphia he's basically going to be responsible for bringing Montreal to the playoffs. So basically Montreal passing on him would come back and benefit them in the end. But if Columbus wins that one, Montreal has to get at least a point against the Hurricanes. And there's a lot of bad blood between Montreal and Carolina after the offersheet drama. Imagine Kotkaniemi having a huge game and be responsible for iliminating Montreal from the playoffs.

In the end the difference between Montreal or Columbus making the playoffs can be razorsharp. And that difference can in the end come down to the Laine trade. Laine saved Montreal's powerplay and helped them win several games. Those goals would've been massive for Columbus to have. And if it goes the other way and Columbus magically makes it, one could argue that it was Laine's heel promo that gifted Columbus 4 extra points that comes back and bites Montreal in the ass.

All in all it comes down to who the hockey gods hate more, Columbus or Patrik Laine.

Update:

Jackets stay alive, Blues clinch, Wild clinch, Leafs clinch the division. Calgary goes down swinging.

Upcoming meaningful games:

4/16
Hurricanes @ Canadiens
- Somehow this has become a potential catastrophe for Montreal. They must win get a point to prevent CBJ from having a clean shot at stealing their playoff spot the following night.

4/17
Islanders @ Blue Jackets -
We’ll see.

...I wouldn't say Catastrophe, as the Habs were projected to be a Basement Team and have surprised...it'll be a choke, no doubt, but they'll learn from it either way, whether it's Playoff experience or learning that there's no easy games and you need to prepare for a WAR every night...

Doesn't a OTL get Montreal in?

I thought it’s Habs need to lose in regulation and then Jackets winning in any fashion gets them in because CBJ will have more wins with 40 to Habs 39, and I believe the 1st tie breaker is the wins no?
First tiebreaker is regulation wins, second tiebreaker is regulation+ot wins. They each have 29 rw's right now, Habs have 37 rw/ot wins to BJ's 33.
