An incredible player and I’ll be the first to admit it.

However, since his 2022-23 form, he has notably declined and has had multiple players enter his tier (Nate, Kucherov).

Both are out scoring him the last 2 years. He clearly has some type of nagging injury or something going on. Still probably the best player in the league, but no longer the consensus best player.
Hey OP, looks like you are back from your slumber after McDavid hit 150 points two years ago. Welcome back!

I see it as past his peak, still in his prime.
The problem is that people started considering putting him up to the big 4. He was the clear cut best player statistically in 2 or 3 seasons. He's been among the best or slightly the best in most other seasons (statistically). That would have never happened with guys like 66, 99 or even 68 in their primes. He surely still has some great hockey left and I see him winning maybe one more Art Ross trophy. Maybe time proves me wrong. I have nothing against him by the way. One of the rarest blend of skill, speed and talent put into fruition. No news here. Maybe the expectations have just unrealistically risen after his 153 point season.

Before anyone shits on the leaf fans for saying dumb things. He's not a leaf fan. Not one post in the leafs board and nothing about them on the mains etc... looks like a troll or attention seeker to me....

Think he's one of "those" Leafs fans who's brain broke when they didn't win the McDavid lottery because they had it built up in their head that they were owed him or something for months on end.

He must be so confused now when McDavid didn't "he tear it up" right at the start and is heating up just now.

Jordan, it's okay, we're all bit regarded, some more than others though.
I couldn’t post at the beginning of the season as I was still banned.

However Mackinnon just had 5 points and has taken a hefty lead. All jokes aside, Mackinnon is handily outscoring him whether you like it or not. And Kucherov outscored him last year.

Edmontons own fans are saying this on their board.

8 point lead in 5 more games played.

Six months ago he was tearing up the playoffs, just saving his energy and body for a new playoff run i reckon. Seeing Barkov cruising through the regular season and ending with the cup must sting.

As someone who regularly posts on HFOil exclusively (mainly because of bait like this) that is patently false. Absolutely nobody is saying that.
Go to his player discussion thread and read since October. It’s literally right there.

Someone even claimed he might have an autoimmune disease.

If he wins 1 more Art Ross trophy that would tie him with Mario and Howe and surpass Jagr. Not to hijack the thread, but since you came at this conversation from a pure statistical angle, you might wanna double check your maths.

This is a fair and well thought out analysis. These are the responses I was looking for.

Thank you.

I agree maybe the expectations are just too high now after his peak season

Kuch and Mac levelled up closer to his level, he didn’t level down to their level.
Exactly. But that proves my point. Regress or not he’s no longer in his own tier. Kuch and Mack are right there.

What you want to hear is not the same as the truth. He was the best he has ever been in the 2024 playoffs.
