Mcdavid 5min Match Penalty: Cross check to the face of Garland (Will have a hearing)

Refs let a lot of penalties against vancouver go. I watched the game and was deeply impressed by the rets not calling a blatant against Vancouver only to call a cheesey one against the Oilers a few moments later. Why Garland did get a roughing penalty is what I am amused by.

A cross check to the head is a cross check to the head ultimately. Neither is justifiable honestly.
It was as bad

I have no issue with McDavid retaliating as long as his punishment is the same as any other player who intends to injure another player. I’m tired of one rule for regular players and another for superstars. Treat them equally as the play was clearly dangerous and could have ended in serious injury.
If this "same rules for every player" was actually enforced, last night doesn't happen, and the Oilers get way more PPs.

Personally im all for penalties being called by the book, including suspensions and fines.

After watching the whole sequence (instead of the little clips people are sharing), it's pretty clear McDavid started this exchange. He did the reverse hit on Garland because he was frustrated Garland knocked the puck off his stick. Then he tackled Garland. I assume when they were on the ice Garland was holding McDavid down (can't tell but I think it's a fair assumption). Then when Garland responded in kind and grabbed McDavid when they stood up, McD did the cross-check.

Matthews got 2 games for less than this against Dahlin and he wasn't a repeat offender like McD. 2 games should be there starting point.

McDavid has been doing dirty infractions 3 games in a row but according to Oilers fan it’s been self defense… 3 games in a row.

A two day rest in January helps in April?
That’s an interesting take.
He's hurt and too proud/stubborn to sit and rest to heal up. He fast tracked his recovery from November last year to play in the heritage classic and hasn't looked the same since. 2 games off should help him a little up and restock the energy reserves somewhat, especially after the last road trip they finished last night.

Do you genuinely believe in your heart that there is some secret mandate to refs to call the game in such a way that the stars of the league spend more time in the penalty box and less time on the ice? Like the league told the refs, "hey let people take cheap shots at McDavid all they want, but if he retaliates, call him for everything and suspend him if you can"?

McDavid even punched Garland in the back of the head for good measure before Garland grabbed him again once he got up.

No it’s not, it’s being realistic. All players fight through hooks and holds. Sadly it’s part of the game. All fans will assume the players they watch have to fight through more than other players.
don't be daft.....Lemieux called out the league back way back when, because plugs could only compete by hooking and holding.
It was why there was a massive rule change....to think guys like Garland for instance get the same abuse as McDavid per shift is being, as I mentioned, willfully ignorant,.

Yes, more specifically the Canadian teams/stars. How is it not obvious?

Every player has and will fight through the same hooking and holding. The only difference is the amount of time said player spends on the ice.

He doesn’t have to fight through nearly as much as people act like he does. Nothing more than the average player.
This is one of the most ridiculous takes that I have ever seen on here and that's saying something. He gets grabbed, held and interfered with all the way from the defensive zone to the neutral zone multiple times in every single game. He is probably the tightest checked player in the league. I'm sure that every other player in the league gets the exact same treatment

i do believe that the refs install game management and call penalties based on the stages the game is in, and whats a penalty in one period, may not be a penalty in another, or from game to game.

I also believe the NHL is the only league in the world where it actively hamstrings its skilled players by allowing lesser skilled players and plugs to hold and obstruct and generally interfere with its stars.

I mean, ask yourself this: if such a game management strategy were to be used, what would it look like? Then ask yourself, what is happening today, and how is it different? You will very quickly see a Venn diagram.

The league cares not for its Canadian teams outside the revenue they bring in. Come playoff time especially, needing the Sunbelt teams to advance is “good business”, so that’s what Gary and crew makes sure happens.

That’s part of hockey, all players have to deal with it. McDavid isn’t treated any differently.

Oiler fans say it about McDavid, Wild fans say it about Kaprizov, Canuck fans said it about both Sedins, Pittsburgh fans said it about Crosby. It’s nothing more than a fan bias because you’re watching and paying attention to the guys on the team you’re cheering for.

Hell just a few minutes earlier in the period Bouchard had Pettersson tied up in a similar fashion

Is the league ever going to actually call the rulebook ? Why are they so insistent on having dirtbags take cheap runs at superstars ? Only major league stupid enough to allow lesser players to literally target and attempt to injure the games stars, in some weird effort to hold on to this old time "tough physical hockey" narrative

Not upset at McDavids response, every time a guy like that gets headshotted or cross checked it's because of several dirty plays that went uncalled prior.
No, they will never call the rulebook, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the NHL is almost certainly worried that calling the rules strictly would result in a less exciting game-flow, hurting revenues and future long-term viewership. It's a billion dollar business, they can't afford to risk that with a boring product. Secondly, much of the rulebook is written with somewhat ambiguous wording, leaving plenty of room for judgement calls by officials. This is likely intentional; the speed of the game makes mistakes by the refs not just possible, but certain. Leaving room for judgement calls gives the refs a little bit of wiggle room to account for those mistakes and make things "right" i.e. game management. It also gives the refs and the NHL room for keeping the game entertaining (via game management) while having the illusion of a solid set of rules and fairness.

Michael Russo had something out earlier this month about the players needing to apply pressure on the NHLPA to in turn put pressure on the NHL if they want the DoPS to actually function properly, but so far the players (as a single unionized entity) have not asked for this. They seem content with the DoPS being toothless.

So it's not that you believe there is special treatment for or against McDavid, it's that you want there to be special treatment for McDavid
