Mcdavid 5min Match Penalty: Cross check to the face of Garland (Suspended 3 games )

the problem isnt the refs . the problem is the league not addressing punk plays like garlands of holding onto to opponants talent players to keep them out of play , if everybody did that hockeys wrecked . there needs be a panel of 7 ex nhlers instead of the stupid covert process theyve now . coaches turn in plays to the panel each week to be pubically talked about by the panel , whom in this case many ex players would rip the hell out of garland because they know nobody wants to see joe smoe clutching onto gretzky/lemuiex/jagr/mcdavid etc because all it does is make for ugly unexciting games fans . its cheating , but many in the hockey universe think 'if you aint cheating you aint trying' , this is at the heart of the matter as its the same attitude the people running nhl have ands a big problem that holds nhl back from being a more exciting thus more popular game

So there was at no time a place where the whistle would have went for a Garland penalty call if it were to be made. The crosscheck wouldn't be avoided in that scenario.

That is unless you want to argue they should get coincidental penalties for roughing before that. Which I'd be fine with but I suspect that's not what you are arguing....

Coincidental penalties for what exactly? McDavid has the nerve to fall on Garland as he was being held?...how dare he.

The players would see the ref's arm in the air signaling a delayed penalty, which tells the players that the ref's are, in fact, doing their jobs and I would bet if that was the case, again the crosscheck doesn't happen.

With 20 seconds left they aren't going to give up control of the puck whether the refs arm is up or not. It's not the end of the first or second. It's the end of the game. They aren't going to risk losing a faceoff when they are in control in the offensive zone. So again, nothing about that changes the cross check occurring. If you think an arm in the air will stop a temper tantrum at that time I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell ya.

  • Garland knocks it away, McDavid then checks Garland. Its a totally legal check, both players were playing the puck. To the people calling this a "pick", it is not. It is actually a pretty smart move by McD because he realizes he is able to check him and take him out of the play
  • Garlund is knocked to the ice. He realizes he can't lose his man so he essentially does an arm lock and drags McDavid down.

  • Garland continues to hold his arm for a couple seconds. McD is trying to get up. He gets frustrated once and gives him a glove to the back of the head. Ref continues to watch
  • Finally Garland lets go McDavid then tries to get back in the play.
  • Garland then GRABS HIM AGAIN and does a bear hug to keep him from getting back in the play.
  • Then the crosscheck happens
It is a pretty plain and simple. Garland doubled down on essentially just holding McDavid for like 5 seconds in a pivotal moment of the game and McDavid snapped. I don't know why people are purposely obtuse about examining these things without understanding the context.

No, I'm not going to watch the play again.

McDavid punched a player in the face while his head was on the ice and then cross checked him in the face.

Stop downplaying. Stop whining. What he did is suspension worthy.

Mcdavid is being dry-humped for 15 seconds straight and looks over at the ref and the ref is saying "Nah, looks good to me" McDavid is understandably upset. Now, if McDavid looks over at the ref while Garland is trying to make sweet, sweet love to him and the ref's arm is in the air, no matter how much time is left, or who has possession of the puck, McDavid would not react in the same manner, because Garlands behavior will be punished.

You can call it a temper tantrum all you want, but the fact is McDavid was watching the refs be complicit in flat out cheating and he got mad. plain and simple.

excellent job of explaining this incident in factual terms . its exactly what happened . and i dont blame mcd for firing off a warning shot . a shot that didnt hurt , and was precisely aimed by mcd in complete control of it , to the helmet on purpose . garland true to his name was hanging around mcd neck like a decorative necklace

so let me get this straight, McDavid gets restrained, and that’s greenlit to butt end someone in the face? Does that seem like an equal reaction?

he literally did fight his own battle because the refs wouldn't do their jobs. he's going to get suspended for it, but he gave Garland what he deserved.

Yes, if McDavid holds someone for 15 straight seconds, absolutely.

It means that Garland paid in full for what he got.

Yup absolutely suspendable and McDavid should get a few games but don't discount how much the NHL is an honour culture league.

We all think less of stars that aren't willing to fight their own battles (Sedins, Bouchard, etc.). We also hate our stars when they cross the line (McDavid, Draisaitl when he was in his nutshot phase, young Crosby). We love/hate cheeky rats depending on what side we are on (Tkachuk, Bergeron, Garland in this case). It's a game that ends up being policed in imperfect ways because of the speed and lack of consistent black and white rules. It ends up being refereed in questionable ways.

Garland came out on top in this case. He played the role of a rat and goaded McDavid. But he paid for it in a way that only makes sense in hockey lol

Would it be nice if McDavid/an Oiler have dropped the gloves and had an honourable fight? Probably, but I think a lot of people are being obtuse to the realities of hockey and it's rules.

Actually, there are other examples of players getting held onto and who did not crosscheck the guy in the face. Funnily enough, it happened earlier in the game when Bouchard held onto Pettersson and Pettersson didn't crosscheck Bouchard in the face. Therefore, in the game, that percentage went down to 50%.

The crosscheck? No. The punch on the ice? Yes. What Garland was doing wasn't a hockey play. If you're going to latch onto someone like that for that long, expect to get punched until you let go. That goes for on and off the ice.

It's a shame it got to the point of the crosscheck, but the infraction was over, and a suspension is deserved.

So the problem isn't the refs. The problem is players breaking the rules and not getting penalized for it? Hmm....sounds like something the refs could maybe address.

But you're right...more effective than the refs actually enforcing the rules as they are written would be a panel, after the fact, saying, 'look at Garland. He's holding onto McDavid. That's clearly a penalty. What a little cheater!'

That will clean up the game.

Lastly...the last half of your post was entirely subjective. What you want to see and what is exciting to you is not neccessarily exciting to everyone else. Some people enjoy the physicality and the battling for every inch of space as opposed to the fancy foot/stickwork. (This is not an endorsement for what happened with Garland. Rather just pointing out it's not an either/or situation necessarily, and you are not the arbiter of what is entertaining.)
