No he won't.

The taxi squad is somewhat of a sham, since it isn't regarded as being official by the IIHF. Technically, any of the 81 players put on the preliminary roster who weren't put on the main roster can be put on the main roster in event of an injury (thus the taxi squad is really 58 players it seems). Hockey Canada decided that it would name a taxi squad of 3 players, to perhaps alleviate the stress associated with picking the team.

As for Bryan McCabe, has anybody wondered if McCabe would play extra physical against the 7 defensemen named to the main roster? That way he could be put on the squad, if someone were to get injured. Just a thought :)

that sucks

can the insert any of the taxi squad players?

Yes. They can even bring more then 3 to Italy for the Olympics. They just can't be in the Olympic Village

I'm a big McCabe fan since his days in NYI, so this might be a bit biased, but I really do think he got the short end of the stick being on the taxi squad ... IMO anyways I would dump Redden and insert McCabe, I understand that Jovonovski, Pronger, and Foote are locks, and thats fine with me ... but I dont think that Redden has outplayed McCabe to earn his spot in the team. Just my thoughts.

Redden has a higher Points per Game then McCabe despite missing 10 games due to injury, and before he left he was on pace to beat McCabe in points, which he still might do.

Also, Redden isn't worthless defensively like McCabe. IMO McCabe doesn't even deserve to be on the taxi squad, it would be the equivilant of bringing Bryan Berard
along, all he brings is his ability to play the 13th forward.

Redden >>>> McCabe

Redden deserves to go before McCabe but I would take McCabe over Jovocop.

Redden does not have a Higher points per game then McCabe. He was never on pace to surpace McCabe for the dmen scoring lead.

Redden:
26pts in 23 games

McCabe:
42 pts in 35 games.

I like McCabe, too, but ahead of Redden? No bloody way. Redden has quite possibly been the best defenceman in the league this year. Not only does he have the tangibles (points and high plus/minus) but he plays an ultra-smart, steady game, he's strong defensively, he isn't afraid to mix it up physically or enter the trenches along the boards, and he can quarterback a power-play. He was a lock.

The only player who I could have seen McCabe beating out for a spot was Jovo. You likely couldn't go with both, as they're not without glaring deficiencies. (They're both time bombs with the puck. The other six were locks.

The only people who would take McCabe over Redden are Leafs homers/Sens haters. The team I cheer for is in the Pacific Division, and I'd be happy to have either one of the two, but if I had a choice, it would be Redden, easily. The only dman on the Canada roster that McCabe could be argued to replace would be Jovo. Foote is debatable but he's proven to step up his play in big games and he's played on a poor Columbus squad.

Redden is a no brainer IMO. I believe he's arguably the best defenceman we've got, he just gets overshadowed by that wookie in Ottawa.

McCabe could be argued instead of Blake, Jovo, or Foote. But I'd say he's a clear downgrade from Niedermayer, Pronger, Regehr, and Redden

mccabe creates offfense with his shot does redden create offense or is he just getting assist from spezza heatly and alfreddson?

If I was Pat Quinn and I had any say in the Olympic roster, I'd want MCabe NOT to be on the main roster but absolutely on the TAXI squad: what bigger motivation but to play every minute of every game at one's best to earn a spot out of the taxi.

McCabe scored again tonight, and surely has extra fire under his butt to prove himself to get the call if there's even a single injury among the main squad.

The Leafs BENEFIT from his taxi squad status!

After two periods tonight:

Redden:
30 points in 24 games

McCabe:
43 points in 36 games

There's no way McCabe would be put on the team ahead of Redden. Redden is much more solid defensively, and is just as much as an offensive threat. An excellent first pass out of the zone will be hugely valueable on the large ice surface, and, Redden is one of the best in the world in that facet.

FWIW, I would have put McCabe at the #7 guy. I figure if our PP is going to slump (and even the most talented PP units will have bad games), throwing McCabe out there, with that point shot, is a big way to change the face of your powerplay. You can always have a stronger powerplay, IMO.

Jovo was a top 4 d-man for Canada at Salt Lake city...

Apparently Turin is going to be refereed like the WJC's resulting in a lot of PP's. And we all know who is leading all Canadians and the league for that matter in PP points.

McCabe allows more goals defensively then he can score. Therefore he doesn't deserve to be on the team. He can settle for taxi squad.

Here is a link to the IIHF taxi squad rules regarding injury substitutions, etc.

"Up to three injured players can be replaced during the Olympic tournament. The stand-by players do not have to named beforehand, but they must come from the pool which was registered on the long-list as of October 24."

I read somewhere else that the list of 3 had to be filed by Feb 10th, but this indicates that it is any player from the original list submitted in October. I would prefer that the players were part of the roster (i.e., expand to 26 and be considered part of the team), but this is different than previous Olympics as before the team would have to work with the 23 players once the tournament started regardless of injuries.
