Matyas Melovsky - 2024 NHL Draft Prospect Profile - The Hockey Writers Latest News, Analysis & More
Profile of Matyas Melovsky, an overage prospect for the 2024 NHL Draft, who played last season for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL.

He is 6’2 at least 190, as per the QMJHL site. The article lists him at 5’10” but in the text says he’s 6’2”. Curious which is correct.
Players like him should be signed as free agents. I still like him as a pick more than Graham. From the surface I really like this pick, Utica desperately needed center depth and he seems to have ok potential as well.
That’s if he makes it through the rest of the 6th/7th and chooses to sign with the Devils. I haven’t seen his tape but I trust when Dennehy says they had him way earlier than what they selected him at. He also hinted they may have reached at a couple players.Players like him should be signed as free agents. I still like him as a pick more than Graham.
Is he immediately eligible for ahl? From the surface I really like this pick, Utica desperately needed center depth and he seems to have ok potential as well.
Yes he is, I believe that was part of the plan from the two trade backs. Try to immediately fix our void at center in Utica. Is he immediately eligible for ahl?
Wasn't sure if he's an over ager or double over ager
Okay. They drafted 4th line center at best. We could find one on the market. Its harder to find developed version of Krutov. You know, at least one pick for upside in the 3-6 rounds. I think Traff has some potential , but still best case scenario is Zetterlund. And I really will be happy. Reason why I like this pick more than others. Even if finding winger for bottom line is even more easier task. That’s if he makes it through the rest of the 6th/7th and chooses to sign with the Devils. Another oof.First all, I'd like to say that I like Melovsky. He's a good defensive center who skates well and is not afraid of the greasy areas. He's got decent size and good skates.
But you also need to add that, when taking a double over-aged player in Round 6 you simply need to hope they're not taken in the next handful of picks and you can essentially sign them to a tryout contract for free.
Melovsky was still a better pick than Graham, as he has a good shot at paving his way as a bottom six center in the AHL and an outside chance at a 4th line C role in the NHL. But it's tough to fathom why an NHL braintrust of a team with $100 million dollars paying team and staff can't figure out that they essentially wasted two picks on players they could have just signed, and instead took the two highest upside available guys in the 5th and 6th rounds and wound up with 4 prospects instead of 2.
So ultimately, I'll say it wasn't a *bad* pick because Melovsky should play a role in the organization in some capacity. I like him as a player, he has heart and some sand and defends and skates well. But as good as our Russian scouting has been, I would've preferred the team to roll the dice on a Kol or Krutov, both of whom were taken by Carolina, and then sign Melovsky tomorrow.
Just like Mulhamadullin…how about we wait and see.Another oof.
Except one is a defenseman drafted in the first round and another is a center drafted in the 7th so nothing alike.Just like Mulhamadullin…how about we wait and see.
I know, but what was the point of your post?Except one is a defenseman drafted in the first round and another is a center drafted in the 7th so nothing alike.
It was commenting on two of @StevenToddIves posts with pretty damning write ups. Certainly not comparing a 7th round forward to a 1st round defenseman.I know, but what was the point of your post?

Its okay with drafting overagers. If they have interesting tools, production etc. There are no magic to be better than most as 18 yo or better than most as 19 yo.I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I really hate drafting over-agers (let alone double over-agers, yikes!) and I think you should always go with potential and high ceilings with any draft pick. That said, it's not a bad pick. Some people are late bloomers, so you never know. He did have amazing WJCs with most assists in the tournament (tied). There were bunch of other high drafted 19 year olds he out produced in that tournament. AHL is gonna be a big step up from the Q and you'd want a 20 year old to contribute pretty soon, so we'll see how it plays out. But in reality how many 6th rounders even become regular AHLers? So in that sense I think it's an alright pick.
I feel like this teams drafts better than we realize. Their weakest drafts being the Covid drafts.
The decree from up top is clearly to find forwards with size and enough skill to maybe become complimentary NHLers. Though i think the two overagers from this year don’t even fall under that mission umbrella. But like it or not, the Devils aren’t interested in finding any more Jesper Bratts with late draft picks. It could be worse. But there has definitely been some questionable picks in recent years like; Chase Stillman, Cole Brown, Samu Salminen, Victor Hurtig, Artem Schlaine, Benjamin Baumgartner and probably some others..
Yea, I found that quite interesting. A second study that I glanced at that touches more on the psychological side of sports.
