First I want to be clear I am a Leaf fan and have been for over 30 years

I will get straight to the point here. Mathews is overrated and is not a player that will take a team deep into the playoffs by his drive and desire to win. He just doesn’t have that trait. Highly skilled no doubt but no extra gear to play through playoff style hockey.

Without Marner feeding him perfect passes we see a ‘franchise’ player that floats around and is not engaged in the play. Pokes at pucks and does big turn backs taking himself out of the play.

Looks like he’s barely trying and always good for careless plays in overtime defensively.

Without Marner he’s lost and his shot seems to come and go as well.

I can imagine another playoffs coming up where he’s just standing there getting punched in the face smiling not fighting back. Because he doesn’t have that intensity.

You’re welcome. It’s a dicusssion forum is it not. What did you want a preemptive letter announcing it ahead of time?
I guess I'm kind of wondering, outside of those folks that look for excuses to dump on the Leafs, why fans of any of the 31 other teams in this League would ever have reason to care. He's not on our team(s), after all. We don't have to worry about lack of winning with him.
some of us have plenty of our own reasons for lack of winning, after all

There are bad takes, and then there are awful takes like this one.

The problem is that Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares are the same player, extremely talented but just don't have that killer it factor/dog/intensity, you can win with guys like that on your team, but you can't win if all 4 of them are basically the same dude.

By now 1 of the 3 young guns should've been gone for a 1D, maybe that wouldn't have worked either, but at the end of the day neither is keeping all of them. What you said applies to all of them, btw Matthews has had these slumps WITH Marner in the lineup.

You described most of the current “star” forwards

The parts that are unprovable and/or unfalsifiable, to start. There may be others.

Then move on. Nobody forced you to reply or read it. But if you actually watch the games it’s true and his goal total doesn’t show the whole truth of how he is playing

7 shots on goal without converting got you pressed?
Watch the entire game or past games since Marner was out and even before that and you’ll see what I’m talking about

7 shots isn’t that difficult with power play, OT time and players going out of their way to feed him the puck

If you wanted to restrict this to Leafs fans, I suggest that you perhaps should have started the thread on the Leafs message board. When you post on a general NHL Talk board, you run the risk of attracking pesky Jackets and/or Preds fans like myself who may be inclined to poke fun at poorly constructed arguments just for a lark despite having zero skin in the game. Really, you only have yourself to blame. ;)

I’m sure I will get over it in about 3 minutes

if matthews could ever score at his regular season paces for once they might at least make it to a conference final, but his goalscoring falls off a cliff during the playoffs
