The person to blame is Keefe for coaching soft, turn your back hockey and rewarding soft play. When the best player in hockey is allowed to be that frustrated it is not him.
A few times it happened to Sid, Penguins changed coaches and players.
So let's keep HoSang and get rid of Marchment....let's fall in love with Kerfoot because toughness is not necessary

I hope Matthews tells Gary to go f*** himself for the next all star game or world cup they try to arrange.

Seriously, what does he have to lose? Not like Matthews will draw less penalties.

Honestly this. You don't want to call penalties fairly against me? You want to give bogus suspension when precedent calls for a fine? Ok, well then next all star game I'll be having a strained calf and next outdoor game I'll be having a brutal migraine I can't play through. I will continue to have these "issues" until the refs smarten up their act and I get an apology for this bull shit.

Whenever a leaf is up for a suspension bet the over

It’s easy money

You got that right, always bet against the Leafs if betting in Vegas is concerned, cha-ching. I don't know how the NHL could be part of the gambling business in Vegas with corrupt officiating like this, just too easy to make money off of gambling when the Leafs are concerned.

I don’t mind what 34 did. I figured a game considering he’s a lady byng finalist. As others mentioned, I hope this is a new side to him. I don’t want him to be a lady byng finalist. He doesn’t have to fight every game but every couple of months remind others there are consequences. More importantly I hope it spurs on the group. “Us vs the world” attitude that this group has never shown. Let’s see Bunting actually loosen his mitts for once, guys like Engvall and Holl who have some size get engaged in their teammates defense.

Rest up Matty, who knows, maybe you just galvanized the boys

Invite the refs to the all star game instead, since they seem to think the game is all about them.

I'm going to take time to cool down on this. But like others I've seen post on here, reddit and other forums about this ... I'm seriously questioning why I am so invested in watching the Leafs/NHL. The reaction that the Leafs have after this may really influence my decisions.

I was so excited when I was able to buy season tickets a few years ago, now I'm wondering if I should even keep them. I don't want to overreact, so my first move may be to just skip going for a year or really cut back the # of games I go to. But if the Leafs don't do something about this bullshit, I'm not sure I want to be their fan anymore.

And by their reaction, I sure hope Shanahan, Dubas or Keefe say something about this. Also curious to see if Matthews says anything (can he get more than a $5k fine from Gary for blasting him or Paros?). There's been a lot of people on these forums that have also speculated the best way for the Leafs to get more powerplays is to start playing dirtier. Another benefit may be the Boston effect: the dirtier you are during the game, the less shocking a suspendable act is, and you may not get anything.

Leafs could also start flexing their muscle by making it known to referees that there will be "consulting" jobs available to many of them after they retire. Hire several guys at 50-100k per year (that's for probably 10hours of work a week on average) for providing their input on how the Leafs can get more calls and get away with more. Also using those consultants to lobby their friends/people they mentored while working.

If Dubas is such a brilliant guy, I want to see something besides us eating a shit sandwich after this and saying to Gary "please sir can I have some more"

Dubas and Shanahan probably enjoying their sandwiches for dinner at the moment...:sarcasm:

It was a viscous cross check, no doubt. No room in the game for that regardless of whatever precedent some believe is the " norm".
Have you read literally anything here? Nobody here thinks it's a clean play, nobody here says under normal fair circumstances it shouldn't be a suspension. In Canada we have something called Case/Common law where precedence matters. It seemed like that was the case at the DoPS (for these cross checks at least) until surprise surprise the biggest star in Toronto commits the same infraction and instead gets a much harsher penalty.

That's the problem it's not consistent and I doubt it will be going forward. The next time a player will be suspended for a cross check is when Nylander or Marner does it in the playoffs. Parros is a scum bag and seems like he can't forgive or forget certain past events.

It wouldn't be so bad if it's simply Parros, but the officials are also corrupt. When Bettman says the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win, there's some truth to it...it will be the hardest for the Toronto Maples to win the Stanley Cup because not only will they have to battle the other teams, they'll have to battle the DOPS and the referees, it will be a near impossible task unless things change.

no injury on the play, no history of discipline to speak of, and the vast majority of cross checks end up in a fine. f*** this league
Yeah well he did get away with mooning that woman.

In today's overly touchy world how Matthews escaped any punishment at all, is either a miracle or somebody spent a lot of "favours" to get a lot of people to turn their collective heads to keep him from having to face a judge.

It is the right amount games for the offence committed, IMO.

The problem, as everyone else has mentioned, is that the Leafs seem to the only team where 'proper' suspension lengths are regularly enforced (and maybe the Rangers).

The statistic earlier in the thread says it all: how is possible that, of the last 24 supplemental discipline for crosschecking, 2 of the 3 suspensions handed out have been Leafs?

the worst thing about this suspension is how every other fan base is so happy Matthews got suspended. i guess it comes with the territory of being connected to the Leafs.

I think it's kinda funny Matthews is so newbie at physical play he can't control his cross check.

I'm ok with a 2 game suspension for cross check to the head. I don't want to see any of that.

I don't like the inconsistency though.

I'm hoping this awakens the beast and Matthews can develop a bit of a mean streak. Or at least have some others step up and dish some out. These guys are embarrassingly soft.

The victim dropped the charges because the incident was less about the act and more so about feeling disrespected by Matthew's camp in the aftermath (iirc it was mainly his father that she had issues). She dropped

I'm used to seeing rival fanbases exaggerate the significance of the incident because of obvious agendas but it's rare that I see the same from within the fanbase. The charge was for disorderly conduct and that seems to match the account of events from both parties. To this day I still see ppl try to play the sexual harassment angle and I don't understand where that comes from.

Opposing teams will applaud...

Lol that’s bullshit

But this is what happens when you’re a soft team. Boston or NYI or Caps do this an it’s not even a penalty

So who am I a fan of there sport, best put on your thinking cap for this:DD and maybe give it another read while you're at it

The crazy thing in all this is matthews going to play 5 less games than Drai/OV/Pasta and still 10 piece them

Matthews is on track to be the GOAT goal scorer and top 30 player alltime. If he wins cups can be in the top 15 range or higher

He deserved maybe 1 game though a 5k fine would make sense and then if he does again it's 1 game

I swear first time offense doesn't matter with the leafs.

Kadri got like 2 games his first time too I think back in 2014 vs the Wild or someone.

Hyman and kerfoot both got 2 games for the first dirty play they had been called to discipline for

If the amount of times you make these dirty plays doesn't impact your games suspended then the league should just set a standard for XX games to be suspended for every type of dirty place

Slew foot --> 2 games
Cross check to face/neck --> 3 games
Etc

Hard to be "tough" when the league will call you on anything out of line.

I haven't been through this whole thread... but did I hear correctly on the radio today? Matthews is something like 263rd overall in drawn penalties. He has drawn 7. All year. The league leading scorer, 263rd overall? Is this correct?
