seems to me the first 10 games at least teams are still getting their legs under them for the most part.

as opposed to where Matthews is doing it, very late in the year when teams are sharpest and pushing for playoff spots/positioning

No, because starting point is set. 50 in 50 is insane however it's achieved though.

That's right. But lots of people said suggested that it's "unofficial". I explained that it's technically not "unofficial" either. Re-read my post.

According to some google research, Jari Kurri in 1986 scored 51 in a 50 game span, from game 23 to 71. But that isn't listed anywhere in any discussion about official or unofficial 50 in 50 scorers. Because it wasn't in his team's, or his own, first 50 games.

What Matthews is doing is incredible, and he could get 50 goals in a 50 game span. I'm just explaining that it isn't going to be recorded anywhere. There's no master list I can find of similar accomplishments.

There's no such thing as an arbitrary limitation for an unofficial run. What would you call 50 goals in any given 50 game stretch, a super duper unofficial 50 in 50?

Yes it is easier at the start because scoring tends to be higher early in the season.

However this year is like a complete anomaly. Scoring is way up in the entire NHL, it's getting to points not seen since the early 90's.

Florida's 4.00+ team GF hasn't been done since the Mario/Jagr Penguins
Josi 100pt D since Leetch/Coffey/Bourque days

If Matthews passes OV's career high this year it will be highest since that Mario/Jagr Penguins

Yeah, gatekeeping on a stat like this makes no sense.

You don't need to separate the "real" 50 in 50's from the "fake" because there is no difference between the two and it's about as rare as Halley's comet right now.

The only guy in the near future I can see getting 50 in 50 if he gets it is Auston Matthews lol. It likely won't happen again for a long, long time.

The next ones to challenge for the 50 in 50 are probably Bedard and Mitchkov if they live to their hype and have a crazy got stretch. And even then very very unlikely those guys can have this level of sustained goal scoring for a 50 game stretch.

Bedard though I think has a shot with how filthy his shooting package is. He should be the consensus best player in the world in the 2030s

I don't think many are considering it a true 50 in 50 because it didn't happen in the same season. Yes it is 50 consecutive games and not Mathews fault that the past 2 seasons were shortened, but if you look on the main boards many are laughing at Leaf fans.

Because it wasn't done in the teams first 50 games. Which shouldn't matter much since no one else has done it in any 50 game stretch in a single season since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.

It already is regardless of powerplays or scoring levels, but he just did this in the lowest scoring season of everyone else who's achieved it. He's having one of the absolute best goal scoring stretches in NHL history, if not the best.
