My instinct tell me the secrecy of the injury and unclear timeline makes this more serious that they let on. If they’re playing mind games with disinformation, looking at the calendar and putting the pause on a guy 2 goals from hitting 60 and in the midst of a Hart and Rocket race it tells you things aren’t business as usual. If you need to manage your lead workhorse like he’s Kawhi I think that means he’s not in a good state. We’re also playing the division rival most likely to meet in the first round and still trying to lock up home ice. So this isn’t a nothing burger vs Buffalo.

There is definitely something there, but why rush him to play unless he is feeling totally ready? This season is not about getting him 60 goals or the Rocket or the Hart. It is about the team making some noise in the playoffs. IF this helps him get ready for game 1, then that's all that matters.

Well, I assume the vast majority of all NHL players are dealing with normal wear and tear by game 78 or whatever we are at now, so Matthews sitting out means his condition is probably worse than your typical level of “not 100%.”

Secondly, I think success is about having your cake and eating it too. So that means the scoring title, the big numbers, awards, the division title or home ice. All the momentum you can generate going into the first round. The fact that there’s some prioritizing, compromising - it’s not an ideal situation. I think there’s some damage control going on.

Boys, everyone step back from the ledge. It should be no surprise the Leafs are keeping their cards close to their chest on this one. Probably a nagging injury they don't want to snowball, so you give Austin a few days.

Guys are acting like it's been weeks already ahaha. Relax, try to enjoy the regular season until playoffs are here and the games matter again.

....having said that if he misses the rest of the regular season....then we should be worried, regardless if he's dressed for game one. Need him sharp and dialed, not coming off a 2-3 week hiatus.
We’ve won like every game since he left too.

In order for Tampa to catch us they need to pretty much run the table and

Damn, the prospect of him missing the playoffs would be a real punch in the gut. It's way too early to entertain that and he was on the ice playing with speed.

Yes, if it is the difference between his health and playoffs, obviously he needs to be healthy to be effecitve and to sustain his career.

I'm concerned it could be his wrist only because he was relying on a slapshot most recently, not his patented snapshot/wrist shot. If he is wearing a wrist brace for example, his slapshot is probably near optimum but he won't have a wrister.

Regardless, get healthy for the playoffs. If he can go, he will go, even if it's only 80%.

Further to my opinion, this is a reminder why Clifford and Simmonds should wing a line with Blackwell this playoffs. No opponent should be allowed to lift a finger to Matthews without consequences.

It's neanderthal thinking, but the league come p!ayoffs especially is a neanderthal league. Sadly.

yea definitely need clifford - blackwell - simmonds 4th line, if only to prevent future injuries and stuff

I really wanted to see Mathews get 60 goals. Crazy how he was so close without playing every game. Now we will have to ignore the Oiltards claiming Draisital is the best goal scorer and Mathews isn’t a 60 goal scorer. Oh wel as long as he’s healthy for the playoffs.

Then why is he practicing?
How long did Muzzin skate for before he returned to action? Many NHL guys skate for months before they return to action. Eichel was skating for a long long time before he debuted for Vegas. Skating means very little. You can check the dates below. If Eichel was a Leaf, some would've had him ready to go on December 2nd.

You should be concerned now.
Why? Such an absurd comment. Keefe has said that if this was a playoff game, Matthews would be playing - but because these games don't matter, rather just rest him.

Probably just bruised up

I don't actually think this at the moment but part of me is a little bit suspicious that he's trying to avoid the pressure of the goal scoring / Hart race.

Again that's probably nonsense, but the ghosting in big moments is starting to become a little too common too completely discount it.

Ovie would have to be forcibly removed from the Ice if he was this close to a goal scoring milestone.

Im not too worried yet. I swear I heard Matthews was feeling really good but wasn't playing the last one
I get the feeling they are giving him the extra day or 2 rest and he will be ready to go next game
be real shame for him to miss out on 60 and possibly hart and rocket
