The NHL is really impotent marketing-wise. For a little while, they obliviously let Matthew Dumba wore the number 55 - so his jersey would read «Dumba55». That was really funny and made news. Then, the Wild had to buy-out Matt Cooke, and Dumba mysteriously started wearing his former number, the 24. «DUMBA24» doesnt even mean anything. Did the NHL force the Wild to buy-out Matt Cooke? With the John Scott fiasco, nothing ever surprise me anymore.

That being said - why would the NHL allow - albeit by mistake - Dumba to rock the 55, but forbid Patirck Maroon to wear the 5? Maroon 5 would be incredibly funny. On a marketing point of view, it's a great opportunity for the league to exploit some of the best songs by the band in advertisements and pre-game montage show.

Anyway, just my two cents.

They should wear whatever number they wish, permitted it has not been retired.
