Value of: Mason McTavish? For reals?

So I'm taking a break and reading ESPN on the NHL (yes, yes, I know), specifically this article:
And in their list of "elite pending free agents" they're sugesting as up for trade, they include... Mason McTavish?
Weekes also heard trade buzz around another foundational player: McTavish, the 21-year-old Ducks center who is in the final season of his rookie contract ahead of restricted free agency. The No. 3 draft pick in 2021 has just two goals and eight assists in 20 games for Anaheim, missing a chunk of time due to an upper-body injury.
I dunno if I'm looking at wild-ass speculation or if there's actually legitimately something there. In any case, what would the Ducks be looking for? (I imagine it'd be a heck of a lot since it seems more than a little early to give up on him, but if there's Something Else going on...)

The Twilight Zone
I would think it would be McTavish+ (whether picks or one of their many young dmen) for someone more established who can pop in some goals. Can't see them moving him for picks/parts.

Is it real? Who the hell knows, the Ducks aren't exactly known for being leaky. But Zegras was looking really good at C before he got hurt and word was the team has been truly happy with his progress, while McTavish has been spotty all year, so perhaps they've finally decided Carlsson-Zegras is their 1-2 of the future down the middle?

There’s no doubt he has been disappointing, but he sure hasn’t been alone in that and when you have a rookie NHL head coach not getting progression from most if not all talented young guys, it would be preferable to make a different type of change *cough*…

That said, given the continuous talk about Zegras, it’s at least somewhat consistent that this comes up, because MacT really hasn’t been showing more drive, attention to defensive detail or discipline than Zegras, to say the least.

It’s hard to tell what they’d be looking for, because I don’t think we have a clear picture of what Verbeeks ideal blueprint would look like. The most obvious guess would be a two-way force of a RHD, but we all know how rare those are.

...and of course we just traded Jiricek away for picks.

I'd love for the Flames to take a swing with one of Coronato, Andersson, or Brzustewicz as a base

Marcus Pettersson in "help on the blueline tier" and Ivan provorov in "elite" tier is certainly something someone wrote down

I appreciate Mario Ferraro’s inclusion in the elite players with term 🤯

I do think at some point, someone will offer stupid vale for him because he plays hard and he’s youngish, but the term elite is bizarre.

Provorov's played himself into a higher category. "Help on the blueline" sounds like damning with faint praise but I assume Petterson would be potentially the best of those listed. They ought to have given him more attention in the writeup.

Pettersson is better than any of the other dman listed in this article, in any tier

I genuinely like the guy and would love to see him in union blue, but c'mon, hon. Nobody's putting him above the likes of Ekblad.

Haha, I was contemplating pre-emptively naming him in some form. :) I am going to guess that, if this report is depicting reality, conversations about those two have been had and at least one side didn’t like the other guy enough to do something around that basis.

Ducks biggest needs are a defensive RHD who can play on the top pair (likely) with Mintyukov in the future and RHS goal scoring forwards, preferably that can win faceoffs. The RHS may not be as big of an issue with Sennecke, Terry, and Colangelo at various points in the system. So unless it's McTavish (probably with an add) for a better player that fits a bigger need, it probably isn't worth moving him.

I recommend looking at this season. We're talking about trade deals for guys on expiring contracts, so that's going to be the primary focus.
Alright. Still clears everyone outside of 9 minutes a night for bortuzzo

Colorado would probably part with Manson if the Ducks had any interest in a reunion
While the thought of Trouba/Gudas/Manson down the right feels kind of nice (in the sense that completing a set of worn-out memorabilia items might feel nice), that’s probably a very different discussion if you want to dump to facilitate another trade.

...would follow that up by recognizing that xGF%, while useful, is not a single-axis This Defenseman Is The Best measurement.
He's also an excellent PKer and eats hard matchups.

Additionally, has more EV points than any dman listed but byram this year, and more than all but K'Andre Miller (63 vs 62) over the last 3 years.

The only reason not to love him is that he hasn't been a PPQB to jack up his point totals

I'm aware. I said I genuinely like the guy and all.

That said, the point of this thread was McTavish.
