The difference is the Ducks were not counting on Selanne to be one of their top two or 3 scorers. They had depth just in case he did start to show his age.

He led their team in points at age 41 (11/12), and was 2nd on their team at age 40 (10/11), so I don't think that's correct.

Only this year has he not been counted on being a top 2/3 scorer, and that's basically because his game has finally declined that far.

Furthermore, I think it's possible for MSL to end up 3rd or 4th on the Rangers in scoring next year and have it not be a disappointment - MZA/Nash/Stepan?

Yeah those years Selanne was good, though he didn't lead the team in goals or assists, but he racked up points yet that team was 13th in their conference. He's a rare player, definitely could still find the net, but We're hoping to compete for the Cup.

I really have no idea what to expect from those 3 you mentioned. The scenario where all 3 outscore MSL is a real stretch cause they'll need him to play well to get there.

I don't know how to attach a picture but if you go and do a search for Martin ST Louis picture ESPN, you will have a very good photo of him in his undy showing his body

Wow, I think I miss it when this thread was used only to complain about St. Louis scoring.

:sarcasm:

OK Marty, this game is what you are here for. Six points in five games was much appreciated, and enabled a lot of people here to give out some 'I told you so's'. All good.

But THIS is why you are here - having a good five games and then shrinking in games six and seven would be unacceptable, you have to come up big in game seven, when it matters most. You demanded the trade at the deadline, you got the trade to the destination you wanted, so many people said during your underwhelming 19 game regular season you would be the difference maker in the playoffs.

It is time. I believe in you now - make it happen!

Let's Go Rangers!

And feel free to tell Nash.

This next series is where we need him to be a monster. He wont have the tight checking that the Flyers put forth, should open up some space. Be the player you always have been Marty and our chances go wayyyy up.

Thought MSL made smart plays. He made a lot of good outlet passes that maybe most casual fans dont notice. But they were passes where you cant believe he knew his teammate was there or was able to put the puck in that spot. Could he have been better? Sure but certainly not bad at all.

Without a doubt we lose that series without MSL.

Overall he was engaged more than any other player in the series as a whole.

His ice time reflects that.

Marty needs to work on his one timers, he has blown like 3-4 sure goals if he could one time it cleanly a couple of feet off the ice into the open net.

Had a clear goal last night but one timed it along the ice and Mason made a relatively "easy" save. If it had been off the ice enough to get over Mason's pad it was a goal.

No way to know that.

Disagree.

1) I can know it I just can't prove it. Lol

2) fair enough, but who was better?

At the end of the day all posts I make are my opinion and do not reflect the opinions of HFNYR. Nor do I make the assertion that anything I post is a fact. Blueshirt Special might not even be my real name.

All kidding aside, I really do believe MSL is the closest we've had to a true veteran PO performer who can get us to the promise land. I never even got that feeling with Jagr and I'm not saying MSL is a better player than Jagr straight up. MSL reminds me of some of the players we had 20 years ago: McTavish, Larmer, etc. and his play and attitude is bleeding over into the rest of the roster. Wanna talk intangibles? This guys gottem but he also has the skill and playmaking ability to back them up.

May not happen this year, clearly it's a tough road, but if not we could be real trouble next season and I'd be perfectly happy making him captain next year. And that's no slight to McD.

My expectation is that he is going to continue to get better through the playoffs. A rise to the occasion type of guy.

We'll see if I'm right....
