Callahan is most likely going to sign in Tampa. He is going to get around the same offer the Rangers gave him except with some kind of NTC. He wants to be on a winning team with a bright future, told his agent personally, Tampa is one of the teams he wants to sign with. Buffalo will take years before they are cup contenders, let alone playoff contenders, years that Cally's prime might not have. Also, 6 Million down there, would be like making 6.5 to 6.7 million in NY because of the income tax situation. Steve Yzeman said he wants to re-sign Callahan, and that is their first priority now. Tampa and the fans have welcomed him with open arms, he had an exellent regular season in their final 20 games. According to them he gets the second loudest cheer in the arena, sounds familar? He would be foolish not to sign with them.

MSL had a slow start, but he is making up for it big time in the playoffs. Which is no surprise since he is a true elite top forward. Tampa's PP and PK has gotten much better since Callahan arrived, and the players and coaches have given a lot of credit to Callahan for that. They needed a guy like Callahan, and they have a good chance to keep him long term now.

I think both teams made out well on the trade, imo.

Thanks for the update / enlightenment. If I understand it right (& the other posters after you), we will get a pick back if he resigns? (That last Word is difficult in English, as I can't tell the difference between signing a new contract With the same employer or trhough Your skates in the Hudson river. Ist it the hyphen?)

I'd be very surprised if Callahan signed in Tampa without first testing the FA market. Once he reaches the FA market, he will take the most $ offered, which could be...who knows.

Callys gonna chase the money. That guy ran to the lightning as soon as the rangers refused to hand Cally a blank check and a NTC. He believes Cally is somehow morally above the money. I really don't think Cally would reject an extra 2 million to stay in Tampa instead of going to play for his hometown team who will recklessly sign him to whatever he wants.

My major Ranger fan buddy asked me to use my incredible photo editing skills to make a Martin St. Luigi, then told me afterwards that he had no purpose for it. Why not share it with you angels, am I right?

Yeah this TBLightning guy changes allegiances after the trade and then paints this picture like Cally cares so much about loyalty and will re-sign with Tampa because he likes the area and the fans oh the fans, they're so amazing.

Rangers fans loved Callahan. He was the heart and soul of our team. That didn't stop him from asking for the moon. What the hell is 2 months in Tampa gonna do to change his original game plan? He may sign there, but he will test FA first. He'd be dumb not to.

Callahan's agent knows that the smaller stature and the physical style that his client plays, this is probably the last most meaningful contract his client will get.

Tampa will probably get the opportunity to match, but Callahan is not giving out any discounts.

That's no indictment on Callahan. That's just the way NHL Players are going about their business now after the 2nd Owners lockout.

There will be outliers like the Steen extension, but I do not see Callahan taking less than 36 or better over 6 years LEAST.

A team like Buffalo could go 7

wanting to play for a winner is a nice sound bite to the fans. He's going to look out for himself (and rightfully so) and then hopefully that team is also close to winning soon.

Don't discount Florida's lack of income tax. That will come into play here, too.

Personally, I was/am against a huge, long term contract for Callahan. I think he is an easy player to love but also an easy player to overpay and be stuck with when he declines (and declines fast). There's no guarantee that would happen, but it is a very real possibility.

With that said, I felt we gave up too much for St. Louis at this point in his career. I'd love nothing more for him to dazzle in the playoffs and earn a second ring. I just don't see it happening.

Teemu Selanne was over a point per game at age 40, and scored 66 points at age 41. That's my hope with St. Louis--that's he's still a lethal point producer for another three or four years. I think he can do it.

I agree about the fact we gave up too much in the long haul for MSL but one thing that has been truly amazing is his work ethic/ condtioning. It's also seems even for his smaller size he doesn't seem to be fragile which bodes well in the long run

For MSL, sure, great. But for the Rangers? We only need him to do that for next season ;)

He only wanted to come here. If he doesn't retire after next season, I don't see why he wouldn't re-sign here.

He has already stated that he doesn't want to retire after next season. He wants to re-sign and be closer to his family in Connecticut. There is a reason he forced a trade to NY only.

Doesn't mean we have to re-sign him, does it?

id hope we did lol. if hes a capable 60 point player in 2 years he must be signed, especially for the assets he cost us. 2.5-3.5 years of above average play would make the loss of the 1st rounder in 2015 more tolerable.

Doesn't mean that they have to resign him, but if he's performing well here, and he wants to stay here, resigning him for a reasonable amount could be the best option for both MSL and for the Rangers.

If he wants another 1-2 years after, that would be ideal. That means the remainder of his time year will perfectly coincide with the "peak" years left that Nash, Lundqvist, Girardi, Staal, and Zucc can expect them to perform at.

Loved Cally and was sad to see him go, but I'm totally OK with it now.

He could turn around and come back to NYC for $5M/5 and I wouldn't want it, tbh. I've moved on. I love what we're getting from MSL right now and he's only signed for a year at a great price. We can have fun with him next year and see if he wants to sign another short "retirement" deal or not, based on our situation and what he has left in the tank. We'll get physicality elsewhere, and we have good leadership guys.

As to where he signs... I could see him sign in TB. Money-wise it works, especially with the oft-mentioned lack of state income tax. We can't discredit that when comparing other deals. If they want him enough and he likes his situation there, he'll sign. Competitive team, fun environment for him, money target... sure. It'll depend on if someone offers more or equal, that's as competitive, and maybe closer to home or where he'd want to be location/family-wise.

Best of luck to him and TB either way.
