I hope he resigns down there. The Rangers could use the pick
Callahan is most likely going to sign in Tampa. He is going to get around the same offer the Rangers gave him except with some kind of NTC. He wants to be on a winning team with a bright future, told his agent personally, Tampa is one of the teams he wants to sign with. Buffalo will take years before they are cup contenders, let alone playoff contenders, years that Cally's prime might not have. Also, 6 Million down there, would be like making 6.5 to 6.7 million in NY because of the income tax situation. Steve Yzeman said he wants to re-sign Callahan, and that is their first priority now. Tampa and the fans have welcomed him with open arms, he had an exellent regular season in their final 20 games. According to them he gets the second loudest cheer in the arena, sounds familar? He would be foolish not to sign with them.
MSL had a slow start, but he is making up for it big time in the playoffs. Which is no surprise since he is a true elite top forward. Tampa's PP and PK has gotten much better since Callahan arrived, and the players and coaches have given a lot of credit to Callahan for that. They needed a guy like Callahan, and they have a good chance to keep him long term now.
I think both teams made out well on the trade, imo.

Callys gonna chase the money. That guy ran to the lightning as soon as the rangers refused to hand Cally a blank check and a NTC. He believes Cally is somehow morally above the money. I really don't think Cally would reject an extra 2 million to stay in Tampa instead of going to play for his hometown team who will recklessly sign him to whatever he wants.
Callahan's agent knows that the smaller stature and the physical style that his client plays, this is probably the last most meaningful contract his client will get.
Tampa will probably get the opportunity to match, but Callahan is not giving out any discounts.
That's no indictment on Callahan. That's just the way NHL Players are going about their business now after the 2nd Owners lockout.
There will be outliers like the Steen extension, but I do not see Callahan taking less than 36 or better over 6 years LEAST.
A team like Buffalo could go 7
wanting to play for a winner is a nice sound bite to the fans. He's going to look out for himself (and rightfully so) and then hopefully that team is also close to winning soon.
My major Ranger fan buddy asked me to use my incredible photo editing skills to make a Martin St. Luigi, then told me afterwards that he had no purpose for it. Why not share it with you angels, am I right?

Once he got going, he's been a revelation for this squad. A player we've been missing for years and years.
Personally, I was/am against a huge, long term contract for Callahan. I think he is an easy player to love but also an easy player to overpay and be stuck with when he declines (and declines fast). There's no guarantee that would happen, but it is a very real possibility.
With that said, I felt we gave up too much for St. Louis at this point in his career. I'd love nothing more for him to dazzle in the playoffs and earn a second ring. I just don't see it happening.
Teemu Selanne was over a point per game at age 40, and scored 66 points at age 41. That's my hope with St. Louis--that's he's still a lethal point producer for another three or four years. I think he can do it.
For MSL, sure, great. But for the Rangers? We only need him to do that for next season![]()
He only wanted to come here. If he doesn't retire after next season, I don't see why he wouldn't re-sign here.

He has already stated that he doesn't want to retire after next season. He wants to re-sign and be closer to his family in Connecticut. There is a reason he forced a trade to NY only.
Doesn't mean we have to re-sign him, does it?

Doesn't mean that they have to resign him, but if he's performing well here, and he wants to stay here, resigning him for a reasonable amount could be the best option for both MSL and for the Rangers.
