the "lot more" remains to be seen.

If i had to give up Ryan Callahan, Bobby Sanguinetti and Hugh Jessiman to get 2 years of MSL playing at an elite level...I probably make that trade.

If I had to give up Ryan Callahan, Marc Staal, and Chris Kreider for 2 years of MSL playing at an elite level, I'd kill myself because that's a terrible trade.

i simply refuse to judge the "success" of this trade until i find out what those picks were.

Like ive said millions of times, its a trade i probably wouldnt have done...but its a trade that may or may not be a good one depending on how those variables turn out. there is simply no way to know right now....

if we win a cup, its a good trade.

if those picks are busts, its a good trade.

if MSL mentors MZA to become the next MSL then its a good trade

if i could have figured out another 3 letter "M" abbreviation to use in the above phrase it would have been a good trade.

if MSL helps Nash take another step next season and get back to his dominating ways, then its a good trade.

there are just way too many moving parts to judge the success of this trade by our cup run this season.

ask me in 5 years, i'll tell you what it is. as of right now, its a trade...not good...not bad...just a trade.

You do realize that unless we get the #1 pick in 2015 and get the guy everyone would get in McDavid you will NEVER know who we would have gotten?

He might be able to hit like a truck, but if he handles like one it won't make a difference.

McIlrath was extraordinarily raw when we drafted him. Even when he joined the AHL midway through last season, he looked incredibly raw. Had he not been this big, he would've definitely played in the ECHL, but he is huge and the Rangers used #10 on him, so they stuck him immediately in the AHL.

MCI went from looking lost to being on the PK pretty quickly. He then continued to improve to the point where by the end of 2012-13, he looked like he would've been a quality AHLer even without his size. This year he got more skating stability (still needs a little work) and learned to handle the puck decently well for a big defensive blueliner. Assuming he continues to develop next season, which he should considering that he's only 22 years old, MCI should have the skill to play in the NHL at some point after the New Year. When I say "have the skill to play in the NHL," I mean actual ability and disregarding his size. If he were only 6-2 200 pounds, I'd still think that he'd make the NHL at some point in the calendar year 2015. With his size, he'll be that much more effective.

That said, you will need to give him an allowance when he first joins the NHL. He's a slow learner, but he's a slow-and-steady learner. He doesn't make bursts forward in his development, but he does go step by step, game by game, improving little by little where by the end of the season, he's looking like a much better player than at the start.

A first round pick on its face is an asset. Its not necessarily going to be judged about whether the player eventually drafted becomes a good player or not.
So you could, hypothetically, trade one of them along with a top-six forward for one of the elite scorers in the league?

Yes!

Its MSL's age that always bothered me. That, and the new business plan of targeting players that are demanding trades to NY and still managing to overpay in terms of assets.

If his limited time against NHL competition is any indication, he should be ready to really contribute by 2024 then.

Can he play in AV's system? I wouldn't be that worried if Torts were still here.

really?

that's total news to me.

I'll judge whoever is taken there...as everyone else always does. whether its fair or not, everyone does it.

wait what?

he actually looked pretty decent in his 1 cup of coffee....like a decent 3rd pairing emergency guy. i didnt really remember him doing anything god awful...did you?

he looked like he needed work in the preseason, but i thought aside from taking 1 run at a player and putting himself out of position, he looked pretty decent....

youre going to judge him by 1 game?

Everyone does it is the worst justification for anything. It's a complete fallacy and if you want to bother yourself by being upset at the superstar the Lightning drafted while having absolutely no idea if the Rangers would have drafted him that's your prerogative I guess. It's silly, but it's your right.

I don't see why St. Louis' age should be a problem. They view St. Louis as an asset for at least 1.25 years and likely more, while Callahan only 0.25 years.

Overpay in terms of assets is subjective, and IMO way off.

Are you blind, or just trying to be an *******?
Ok. So then the question is are you positive that St. Louis is in the class of these 7? And were they elite at that age? Because I though that we traded for "elite" level production.

You seem to ignoring every point 31 has made and just repeating what you've been saying. I'm not sure if you're not understanding it or you're purposely ignoring it because it doesn't fit your narrative. For your sake I hope it's the latter.
No, I just do not view MSL as an all-time great.

Change of topic. Pretty smooth transition and relatively subtle, have to give you credit.

why not?

everyone else jumps up in arms over Tarasenko vs McIlrath when we all know the Rangers just flat out preferred MCI.

it's not the same situation, obviously, but it shows how people just don't let things go, particularly when it comes to draft picks.

"we could have had X" still applies to ppl...whether its because we traded the pick, or its because we passed up a pick to address another glaring need.

*shrugs*

MSL has already said he will not retire after next season. He wants to keep playing. He only wants to play in NY to be near his family. That most likely means he will come in at a bit of a discount in terms of cap numbers. Hell, he is only making 5.25 million this year and next. That's a STEAL for what he brings.

If he puts up 70 points next year, 60 points the following year and 50 points in his final season while improving the PP and being a leader, I'd consider this trade a success.

Especially since he's money come playoff time. That's a big factor.

At this point, I have no clue what you are trying to argue.

No, pretty relevant when I have been hearing that sacrificing draft picks is worth it when we are trading for elite level talent. What are the chances that MSL is elite over next several years? Providing he deigns to resign here.

If we don't win a cup, or at least get to the finals. This trade will be a failure.

Pretty good based on other players who have performed at his level at age 38.
