New York Islanders: Martinek signs for 1 year

Solid. He usual is good for only 40 games a year, so maybe he plays a full season this year in a shortened year.

Really like Marty. A great guy, a great teammate, the anti-Visnovsky. At his best he plays a good skating game, has good positioning on the ice, more physical than it would appear.
At this stage of his injury riddled career he will unfortunately be forced into 2nd pair minutes because of the holes in our lineup, but he will do his best and there are very few other options for us.

Solid replacement if he can stay healthy, which is a big if. It's nice to have a guy that has always loved playing on the Island though, at least we can count on Radek to give it his all.

I hope Radek finally decided to hit the ROIDS....man strength was the only thing stopping him from being a Kenny Jonnson clone.

I am sorry but I think I might be the only one who thinks this is a waste of time. Martinek is not good anymore. He was already not big enough for the east and to brittle and now he is just to old and slow. I am trying not to be a glass is half empty type of guy for this shortened season but I am struggling to find ways to see the Islanders compete for a playoff spot and it is getting really hard...

Low risk signing. Probably on the cheap. But, I would have rather seen them sign Gilroy. He just signed with the Rags for $ 650K. I bet he would have signed here for a little more money ($ 800K) and the potential of more ice time.

We need defense though...

Good signing. Always liked Radek...not a very loud guy by any means, but he comes in and gets the job done on the ice. When healthy, that is.

Radek is a much better defenseman when he isn't in the hospital and I don't really think much of what ever is left of Gilroy's developmental ceiling.

Incredible hands and skating, but he forces it or abandons it at the NHL level. Hes dumb to sign with the Rangers. Hes insurance to DelZotto. On a less prestigious team hed actually get development. Hes on par with most rookie puck movers, he could beat out a few on a d weak team and get minutes.

From Bob Mckenzie heres the details:

Radek Martinek's one-year deal with the NYI is for $600K with potential for another $150K in GP bonuses. Cap hit is $600K.
The bonus kicks in if he plays at least 5 games :sarcasm:

Glad to see Radek back, he was always one of my favorites in spite of the endless injury situation. At this point I'd rather have 15 or 20 games of Radek than 48 games of :cry:novsky.
