Very curious to see how this numbers game is going to work in net below the NHL level.

Woll probably out to start the season, but it's still

Woll
Kallgren
Petruzzelli
McKay
Cavallin
Semptimphelter

Hildeby can also come over once his SHL season ends.

I do not really understand why Semptimhelter would be brought in.

We have 5 guys: An AHL rotation of Woll, Kallgren, and Petruzzelli and an ECHL tandem of McKay and Cavallin. The Growlers may need to bring in a temporary backup while McKay serves a short suspension, but that shouldn't be hard to find.

Semptimhelter does not have a large enough sample size to warrant an ELC, and I do not see why he would take less than that at this point. A good season or two at ASU could get him one, and while he does have competition there, it is not like there is an NHL-caliber prospect to beat for a starting job.

Thanks for posting this and reminding me of the type of scorer Robertson can be. He really does have a wonderful ability to put the puck in the net. I know there's been some discussion as to switching Marner and Nylander, and I'm leaning towards moving Willy up to Matthews wing because I like Marner's ability to play at Tavares' speed (better than Nylander) and offering both Tavares and especially Robertson one of the top set up wingers in the league.

Matthews will get his goals with Willy on the RW and Bunting doing his Bunting things, maybe not as many as this year, but I see no issue with him sniping 50+, and 88 may benefit from a bit more open ice because of the way teams must concentrate on Matthews in their defensive zone.

Marner provides a more defensively sound player for Tavares to work with, a player who can slow things down better than Nylander, and is such a great passer that we've seen JT score more than ever before with Mitch on his wing. Offer Robertson and his ability to find seams to get open and shoot and suddenly Marner's vision has two quality options + his own growing skill as a scorer.

In short: first line production may drop a bit, 2nd line production could soar.

Hoping Joey Anderson can break onto the team. Solid frame, decent forechecker/digger, has shown ability to finish at the AHL level, responsible two-way player, 58 games NHL experience @ 24yrs old, and seemingly has good leadership qualities. Need to start having some of these guys just through. Think he could be a serviceable bottom 6 winger for us on the cheap

Looks like he’s in the 3rd/4th line RW dog fight with Malgin, Aube-Kube, Gaudette and Simmonds, assuming Karnkrok up on the second line or centring his own if Kerf is dealt.
I hope he puts it all out there and wins a job.
Might end up a waivers risk.

Any reason people don't seem higher on Steeves? From what I know he's fairly defensively responsible, very fast, good scoring touch, and still fairly young...but you hardly hear a peep about him.

every time I have watched Villeneuve I have come away impressed. Seems like an incredibly intelligent player, at least when playing against his age group. It just seems like more often then not he makes the right decision. I see an NHL skillset for sure, the only real question that remains to be answered is how will he adapt to the pro game. I've never came away with the impression that his game is overly risky, so I don't foresee the increase in pace to factor in as much as it would for a high risk/reward player. Wherein his decisions with the puck always seem to be largely high probability plays, so he really won't have to adjust his decision making, but rather just get his timing down. Something I feel like he will figure out sooner rather than later.

He's a slow burn prospect for me. I love what he's done so far in his development, it's just a matter of keeping that foot on the gas and rounding out that 2-way game even more.

Same reason people weren't higher on Moore, combo of "boring" (high energy average/small 2-way mid 6 upside) plus not being drafted so no multi-year emotional investment in his progression from 18-21

Maybe.
I think it’s more about the numbers game that’s tempering enthusiasm atm about him. And probably Pontus too.
Given that he/both are waiver exempt, and there were three/four forwards added as free agents, they’re gonna have to really beat out the incumbents and new guys.

With the Semptimphelter rumours, if it was an ELC I wonder about a CHL team with an open OA slot. If that happens it makes me even more curious about our draft board, and just how high our scouts are on the guys we actually picked

@SeaOfBlue

Woll -98
Kallgren -96
Petruzzelli - 99
McKay- 97
Cavallin- 2001

Could see them wanting to add more younger blood if TJ can play outside of the pro system

I think the key point here which you make well is they have a lot of options.

I know everyone is worried about Tavares-Nylander as a pairing but they can try a few things they really didn't last year, its a long season.

Easiest answer is giving Tavares Marner some roadway to go together.

Another is moving Bunting to the Tavares-Nylander pairing to act as a digger - something they didn't try last year much. Then they can put Robertson (or another Marlie, but I'd give Robertson the first shot) LW on the Matthews-Marner line - they'd be more than fine.

Like others I like the idea of getting a LW that can play up the lineup, but if the fit/cost isn't there, the point of the "big 4" forwards is to be able to lift up other players they're working with - some Marlie should be the leafs Mark Donk - if Robertson doesn't work.

The more I think about the more I don't mind Engvall getting a look on the 2nd line. Noting especially that the difference in Kerf and Engvall's production last year was mostly Kerf getting way more secondary assists.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Engvall - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Jarnkrok - Kerfoot
Kubel - Kampf - Anderson

I loved what Moore brought to the team.
This yr.for LA
81 gp 48 pts
If we uncovered another Moore I would be happy.

I think they're going to have a lot of different things they try in the top six. We know Bunting will take one of the T6 LW spots, but I imagine there will be some healthy competition for the other.

Engvall is a unique option, could help the JT-WN line at 5v5 driving play as well, but obviously it hurts the bottom six as him and Kampf worked well together I thought. Definitely worth giving it a try though.

I think he has had to earn his opportunity. But, with Mikheyev and Kase moving on I think we'll see a lot more of Engvall on the 2nd line. He's earned a shot.

Initially shy, Tverberg was amazed at how easy it was to strike up a conversation with any of the Leafs around the facility. Given Tverberg’s obscure hockey reference, it wasn’t a surprise to learn that he bonded well with Jason Spezza.

“I would always steal things from him, which is crazy because he was such an old guy and it’s kind just cool how I’m running outside on the track with him and just being on the ice and seeing how he skates how his hands were,” Tverberg said. ”How he can shoot the puck was just crazy to me at such an older age than me.”

I don’t mind the add, but I am curious, concerned there isn’t enough ice time to go around to develop these guys.

Seems a little vanilla to me. Not overly physical, not a standout defensively, not a burner skating wise. He puts up a lot of points for his experience level and he brings those other elements, just not enough to be thought of as a thumper, burner or PK/defensive guru.

Time for Robertson to do this at the NHL level. Only one empty net goal out of his 16 in the AHL last year (28 games) 20 years old. He has an NHL shot. Nose for the net, I think his injuries are the only reason people don't have him penned into the lineup. Time to give him a long look. Excited for him this season.

If he brings a consistent physical presents.
No fly bys .

Yeah I was just thinking that fossil could almost be my son :) This is how its passed on though. Work out with the old guy and listen to whatever he did that made him into an NHL gunslinger. Spezza was probably thinking "this guy weighs about the same as one of my legs, how will he survive?" If Spez can tell him one thing to add to his tool box then he is ahead of most of his peer group.

He has no physical presence, that's not his game. What we can maybe hope for is an occasional departure from who he is, maybe in a playoff series, but if you didn't hit your first 20 years, it probably isn't coming. I do think that with a less-low event line mate than Kampf he isn't capped at 35 points.
