The National League and Swiss Hockey did not have a transfer agreement in place with the NHL when Herzog was drafted.
There is a transfer agreement now, I believe, but I don't know if that's just for SPCs or if they've written in details for reserve rights for drafted players from Switzerland into that agreement - either way, a player drafted from a non-MNA (MNA is a Member National Association, a team registered with the IIHF to their Transfer Agreement) has their rights held indefinitely, regardless of age.

It appears, whether the new agreement with Swiss Hockey has addressed that or not, Herzog is carried over because of his status when he was drafted.

The KHL and all Russian Hockey falls under the same rules. There are a few others, too, but Russia and Switzerland are really the only two that actually get drafted from, so the only two it effects. But all of our Russian draft picks will be the same. If they don't sign, we hold their rights in perpetuity, unless we denounce them, OR until they sign an SPC.

About half the League has at least one of these guys on their Reserve List. Now, I don't know where CapFriendly is actually pulling their Reserve Lists from - whether they are just assuming the team is choosing to retain the rights until they learn otherwise, or if they actually have access to the NHL's official lists.
I would've guessed it was a de facto "keep the player on the list until x years after their last pro game", but they have New Jersey retaining 37 y/o Ivan Khomutov, who hasn't played since 2014...

St. Louis is an interesting one, carrying FIVE players, ages 36-39, all Russian. Washington has one 37 y/o from Switzerland and three others from Russia. Columbus is holding on to the rights of a 41 year old LW. Just hoping he'll finally have that breakthrough season and they can bring him over, I guess! haha

Kind of reminds me of how long they held onto Komarov before he came over to North America. But I doubt Herzog would follow that path at 28. Great information!

They loved his defensive game

Really? He is not really that special of a defensive player.

It was more of his work ethic, intelligence, and ability to play a strong forechecking/north-south game with the hope that he could add more dynamic ability that they liked.

I'd think those attributes would make playing good defense probable.

A couple of the prospects already auditioned didn't show much of either.

When they played there pre-season game the commentators mention it .

He never really should have had a contract in the first place, and the pick never made sense from the beginning.

The extra contract spot is great, especially since he had multiple years left.

He should be fine going back to Europe. He is good enough to have a career there. He was never going to have one in the NHL or possibly even the AHL.

Now if we can only figure something out with Gogolev...

Too early to give up on Ellis, I still think he could be something

Ellis is fine. Needs to work out the offense but he is also being used in the bottom 6 a lot, and it is not very common for Marlies bottom 6 guys (especially 4th line guys) to put up a ton of offense with how they are used.

He is the kind of guy who could end up being similar to Trevor Moore, who suffered from the same sort of treatment. Moore only had 6 points in his first 20+ games with the Marlies at 21 (Ellis is 22) and finished the year with 33 points in 57 games.

Only put up 33 points in 68 games the next year with 8 points in his first 34 games but really came on the radar in the playoffs when he went from mostly invisible and underwhelming to almost a PPG player and he did the rest from there.

The open contract spot might be more valuable then he was anyways.

No doubt. He shouldn't have been given one in the first place, but no harm done now. It is nice to have a little bit of the extra flexibility for free.

We need to start bringing in some more defensemen though. Most of the guys we have are pretty solid, but there just are not a lot of them in the pipeline right now. 2 straight years without drafting one at all.

Kral, Kokkonen, Koster at LD (Koster may be able to play RD too). Villeneuve and Niemela at RD. Of course you can also count Fusco, Loponen, O'Connell and who knows which AHL contract guys amount to anything... Miller and Rifai have been fairly solid as a pure defensive defenseman types. Hoefenmayer has impressed as an offensive defenseman. We could stand to add some younger options going forward.

Anyone know how soon or if we can see Roni and Topi this season?

Would they be eligible to play for the Leafs or Marlies after their teams are eliminated, like Knies and Abruzesse last season?

Finally, when can we have them for good to Join the Leafs/Marlies programs?

Thanks all.
