It looks like Leafs draft pick Dakota Joshua is quietly turning himself into an NHL player. He's become a middleweight enforcer who produces a good amount of offense from someone in a 4th line role (20-30 point pace this year and last). Another gritty young player the Leafs gave away for less than he was worth that has been good since being moved.

Good for him and a nice depth signing by the Canucks.

He's turning 27 years old this season with less than 100 NHL games by the end of the season. He took a very long time to develop and he's just an NHL depth player. Even the Blues cut ties with him since he was just an average AHLer as well.

He's also shooting 25% right now. You think he keeps up that pace?

It's good to see Joshua finally making it. During his slow path, I had wondered if he would have been in the plans or not. I remember hoping to give him time with the Marlies to see how he'd fare.

It's also good to see considering during the Quinn/JFJ/Burke/Nonis eras, our US high school/USHL/NCAA drafting was generally terrible. Well most of our drafting was, but that area was essentially the biggest black hole (kind of how our Russian drafting feels like now, hopefully Grebenkin or the goalies can change that).

I remember a couple years after the 2014 draft, this board going back and analyzing and wondering what we were doing with Piccinich, Joshua and Vesey all drafted back to back to back. Just seemed like a waste when more skilled players or generally more CHL players would have been the play. So nice to see he has finally made it. Good to see Toninato still kicking around too.

The most untouchable prospect we’ve had since Marner was playing in junior during the 15-16 season.
So hard not to be excited for this kid.

Can’t remember the last time we had a prospect who fit the true Power Forward mold quite like this kid projects to do…

Definitely a signal warning curve ahead for him but the tools he brings are cause for some intrigue.

Are we expecting any leaf prospect in the world juniors this year? I honestly can't think of anyone.

And the last time we had a prospect play on Team Canada was Marner and Dermott in the 2016 WJC. We don't like drafting quality Canadian talent.

How much time should an organization give to a prospect before cutting bait?

There is also a factor of not caring about a 4th liner that you could find on an annual basis at the start of free agency.

The Leafs won't have a prospect at the WJCs this year. Grebyonkin would have been on Team Russia if they were at the WJCs. Voit should have been on Team USA.

Tverberg just missed the cut to make the team last year. Minten should be a contender to make it next season. Moldenhauer could be a darkhorse to make it next year.

Who cares where you draft as long as you draft good players?

Random note but Tverberg looks like the love child of Jeremy Bracco and Johnny Gaudreau.

So.... sign Ben Schoen?

Lol. 5’8” 154 lbs. 3 goals 11 assists in 17 games. Might be an ok AHL player one day, but I doubt there is more there than that.

His brother is Luke Schoen. Close name….

It’s great watching our prospects excel at the various levels.

He's up to a 2.10 GAA and a .927 SV% in 8 games.
Leafs have gone from a goalie graveyard to potentially having a goalie prospect army. Petruzzelli, Kallgren, Woll (if he stays healthy), McKay, Hildeby, Akhtyamov, and Peksa. They also have 21-yr old Luke Cavallin on a 2 year AHL contract and he's killing it with the Growlers in the ECHL (12 games .930 sv% as a rookie), he could also be a dark horse for an ELC like Petruzzelli was. All of this in a 2-year span, back in 2020 all we had were Kasimir Kaskisuo, Woll and Ian Scott who is no longer playing hockey.

I agree that they should draft whoever is good. I don't know I just find it a little weird that non of our prospects have been on a Canadian WJC team in 7 years and we are a Canadian franchise. I just like to see a leafs prospect on Team Canada when I watch them every year. Makes it more interesting you know?

Yeah but with covid, it made things a bit weird in that aspect and the Leafs haven't really picked high, so it's harder to find a top prospect from Canada.

I wonder if the Leafs wouldn't give him an ELC when he came out of college .. he was PPG+ in his sophomore year which was promising but his stats declined the following couple of years. With contact limits I wonder if the Leafs were just wanting to give him an AHL deal, but instead Dubas found him an opportunity to play elsewhere.

Good for him for developing into a physical fourth liner .. would have been nice to see him on the Marlies
