It's not uncommon to see 7th rounders play in the WJC, but I honestly can't remember the last 7th rounder to make Team Canada, let alone the 5th last pick in the draft. It's obviously not a sure thing that Ryan makes the team, and truthfully it's more than likely not going to happen. But he has to be proud of what he's done to put himself in that position. Hopefully this gives him a confidence boost going back to UCONN after the camp. Maybe even work himself into the Hobey talks. Albeit he would likely not win that either lol

It's well earned.

I would not put anything past him at this point. He's been overlooked a large portion of his life already. I think he excels being the underdog.

If Goalies are included, Devon Levi was drafted in the 7th round.

Not sure about the last skater to be drafted that late and make the team tho.

Semyonov on waivers for contract termination. He did have a European out clause in his contract.

If so, it sounds like he tired of waiting for a chance to crack the Leafs lineup and Dubas is holding up his end of the bargain and letting him pursue other opportunities. Too bad as he was at least insurance at the centre position which is kind of thin for us.

Our centre depth looking hella thin

I hope it's not, but Tverberg feels like a token selection. His season this year has been so good he deserves to be on either Canada or USA, but it feels like Canada only has him on the roster to ensure he wasn't able to play for USA. Probably going to be a pretty easy first cut, but it's nice to see him recognized.

Can't believe they didn't bring arguably the best defenseman on the team in Clarke, but :dunno:

I thought I read something about him not meeting the minimum game requirements for the States. Not sure how much truth there is to that.

It would make sense what you're saying, but what a f***ing dirt bag move that would be by Hockey Canada. Invite a kid to essentially cut him. I'd like to think if he impresses at camp they are going to give him a real look TBH. I honestly don't think Ryan is that stupid to fall for that level of gamesmanship.

either he feels unequivocally Canadian, Wasn't eligible for the US team, or he had eligibility on either team actually thinks he has a strong chance at making Canada as well.

will be a fun story to track

Ya very impressive from Levi for sure, but Goalies tend to go later in drafts anyway. I don't doubt that Canada has had a 7th round player on their roster before, I just can't remember any. Seems like every team they put out is largely drafted in the top 3 rounds or projected top 5 picks

If I remember correctly Joe Hicketts went undrafted and made the team.

The issue isn't Ryan's stupidity, it's the fact that hockey Canada/USA have to set precedents for dual citizens. The more they let change nationalities the more chance they could lose someone that they could really care about in the future.

Obviously hoping he makes it, but I just had this weird feeling that Canada is just doing it to hold it over USA's head.

Someone posted in the Team Canada roster thread on how Cameron has built his teams in the past and the reliance on big or extremely physical players.

I agree with you saying he doesnt have a great shot but if there was ever a coach that could choose a lesser known high energy/physical player it might be this one.

And the Leafs traded for that pick specifically to pick Tverberg.

Most posters (myself included) wondered why they bothered.

Now we know. lol

It still feels weird. Not that they like Tverberg, but they had 5 picks in the 6th and 7th rounds of that draft already. Teams sometimes run out of guys on their list in the late round and give picks to particular scouts(Bergman specials anyone?). The fact that they already had 5 guys they wanted and still had a player they liked enough to trade for another pick is wild. Not only did they have lost of names left but lots of names they liked so much to trade for another pick.

Not only a 7th rounder but one from the NCAA. Usually only 1st round pick NCAA players make team Canada. There shouldn't be a bias but players often get forgotten in other leagues besides the CHL. Him not having draft pedigree, nor constant exposure to hockey Canada and still getting picked is something.

Growlers up 1-0. Love those sweaters! It is a free and legal stream BTW - Reading just tied it 1-1.

It's why I'm so confused. If they are planning on cutting him, they could have brought either of the Savoie's or some other big name to keep people in the hockey world happy. Instead they picked a 7th round pick that's playing on a nothing team in HE that was rumoured to maybe play for team USA. Them bringing him at all to me either means that

a) he's most likely going to find himself on the team
b) they took him as a f*** you to USA and plan on making him an easy cut

It feels weird, but I'm at a point where I think he might make the team.

I mean the option B doesn't really make any sense as he seemingly wasn't eligible for Team USA. He likely accepts a invite from whatever team is more likely to take him regardless and I doubt Hockey Canada is going full on political selection with a relatively obscure 7th round pick.

Yeah, it seems pretty unlikely they'd waste a spot just to stick it to the US. I don't think Tverberg was even eligible for them. I think Canada just really values what he brings

You nailed it right there. That to me was exactly my thought. So many late picks and yet they made a move. I mean, if they liked him that much, they could have just selected him with one of the other picks and not made any move at all.

Tverberg plays the type of game that could make him a darkhorse for the roster if he really busts his ass. He's playing really well and that kind of confidence goes to your legs. And from what I've read when he's moving he's a real PITA to play against, which could earn him a depth spot on Canada.

Still heck of a 7th round pick.

Mind you this is what's great about having a lot of those late rounders. Gives you a lot of chips to play and possibly hit on one.
