exactly, did we not spend an asset ourselves to get Mennel? RHD are a premium asset. You can never have too many of them simply for the fact that there’s not many of them available. You need to develop as many as you can and hopefully recoup assets on. The leafs will have more than enough contracts to keep Hollowell who is an RFA. So this weird crusade to let go of a prospect who seems to be taking a foot in the right direction is pretty weird.
The point is this. If he isn’t in the future plans of the team, move him for a piece, even if it’s a lottery ticket for a future piece. This is a player who has virtually zero chance of being a contributing Leaf. Move him for something that Chas a better chance of helping the big club one day.

exactly, you don’t let a controllable asset go for free. I rather them trade him for a 7th then just let him go unqualified. Either way we have to wait and see what happens the leafs have 4 RHD on the Marlies I think 3 are RFA’s (Duzak, Hollowell, Mennell?) with Villeneuve signed to an ELC for next year & Niemela not a lock to be coming over to North America with his extension. I’m not sure they don’t resign all 3.

We didn't spend an asset on Mennel, the trade was a conditional 7th, which it looks like the conditions won't be met, nothing to do with your original debate, just wanted to point that out.

Nope. We did not spend an asset to get Mennell.

Mennell would have to play 30 games for the Leafs to meet that condition, which is highly unlikely at this point barring major injuries to the blue line.

Has anyone heard anything regarding Nick Robertson? He was listed to be out around 10 weeks and I think we’re around that timeline now. Is he back on the ice practicing or even skating?

Nothing has been really reported so far but there was a note last week that he wouldn't start skating until early January. I have a feeling we'll know soon.

The end of 10 weeks is this week, and nothing has been heard at all. Nothing in press, no comments from staff...etc. I've asked a bunch of Leafs reporters, and the Marlies about it on Twitter though.

Someone mentioned yesterday that his brother (Dallas Stars forward) mentioned they both contracted COVID over the holiday break which delayed him getting back on the ice.

We are right around the 10 week mark (I believe yesterday) so I imagine he will be skating very soon.

I believe Kloke said mid Jan he will return.

Again, thank God you are not the GM of the leafs

We don’t need a 5’9 offensive D on the leafs in the near future. You would be the type of fan to complain about him getting hemmed in his own zone in the playoffs guaranteed.

Good thing you’re not running the leafs! Listen, at the end of the day. There is no reason why the leafs shouldn’t develop hollowell. There is zero downside, if you develop him and he hits that’s all that matters. & who’s to say he doesn’t have NHL upside? He’s looked pretty damn good in his latest stint with the Marlies. That’s the thing with defenseman they need time and opportunity.
There is lots of reason to not sign Hollowell. The guy hasn't shown really any strong improvement over the last couple years.

If you are going to be a 5'9" D-man, you've got to have Spurgeon level of talent... and Spurgeon excels in the D zone. While Hollowell has improved this year in the Ozone, his D game is suspect even at the AHL level. He's just never going to be a NHL defender. He should carve out a decent Minor league, or Euro league career, perhaps even be a top AHL D scorer over his career.

As long as they don't turn over the puck I don't care how tall they are. I've been a fan that has consistently said size doesn't matter. What you need is grit and work ethic and that has nothing to do with size.

Edit: I rarely complain about the team in general, I complain about people on here that's for damn sure. But the team I really don't care enough to the point to complain and I understand that complaining is useless. The Maple Leafs organization don't give a shit about my opinion.

I couldn’t be happier with the state of the organization right now. Dubas has done a tremendous job, warts and all.

I see a lot of these guys becoming decent NHL players at the very least. Especially at wing which gives us options moving forward.

It's definitely in much better hands than it was with Hunter and Lou. Even though those guys had more draft picks to work with. I just wish we did something different with our Russian prospects. Guys like Kara, Kizimov, and Ovchinnikov all had some good tools, but poor development paths and a lack of ice time can really hurt these types of players.

I'm not a size above everything person either but it does take a special player to defend guys much larger than yourself at the NHL level

Not having the physical stature so you can use your body to angle guys or physically seperate them from the puck makes life much harder for your smaller defender, especially in net front situations

We lack places to develop some of these guys, one AHl team with 6 defensive spots available is a real problem

Kral, Rubin's, Duszak, Hellickson, Hollowell are all guys you could argue deserve development time and there's other guys I'm forgetting and at least 3-4 older guys who are leafs spares in case of injury who need to play to

It's a really a great problem to have! when we was the last time we had this much defensive depth?! Or guys that could get a look and we'd feel comfortable about it.

It's the best group I can remember for decades, especially when you consider Liljegren, Sandin and Holl were developed by us as well

We need another AHL team to continue developing the guys that are here and due over the next 2 seasons
