Is the sentiment of us being in on an offer sheet situation something people here think is realistic? Or just more of an interesting what-if to consider?

More of an interesting what-if to consider.

But Tampa is in cap trouble though, and those two players sure do fit needs for this team.

My point was that rebuild always look good on paper, but turning all those picks and prospects into a sustainable balanced competitive team is where the hard work actually begins.
That's not at all what your original reply was about, but is he not doing exactly that again today by opening up space for further depth or making sure there is space so no 2020 2021 bonuses roll over into 21-22?

He's done a great job and deserves the benefit of the doubt on moves. That's what I originally posted and you replied that he had these great assets to start the rebuild with when everyone you listed was nuked here except for hayes who wasn't getting that contract.

No need to keep changing your point, you've done it twice now. Let's just bask in the staal-less rangers...

Interesting...

JD, Gorton, Hank and Staal 100% got together in a room and said "it is one of these two options," and then they hashed out this option. Hank ordered the Code Red.

The front office also essentially attached Georgiev to this move because he's the asset that will recoup this second-round pick they lost (they could possibly/theoretically get one potentially higher).

"And more when Staal traded at 2021 deadline."

I feel like maybe James hasn't watched a lot of Marc's games in recent years...

Nope, they will absolutely get another asset from him. Teams love to stockpile players who have postseason experience, and a lot of teams won't be able to add to what they already have right now because of the flat cap. Hold on to 50% of the hit off an expiring contract for a veteran D who has 100+ playoff games under his belt? More than a few teams would add a 3rd rounder for that.

This was a stupid trade by the Rangers. I'm as fed up with Staal's play as anyone, but who plays the left side? They had Staal, Smith, Lindgren and question marks. Will Hajek lock down a spot? Will Lindgren replicate or improve on his season last year? Will Miller be ready for regular minutes as a rookie (when a year in the AHL would have done him a world of good)? The Rangers aren't contending this year anyway. It would have been better to hold on to Staal and Smith and then offer them both up at 50% retention at the trade deadline (as both are expiring contracts). Instead of paying a 2nd rounder, they might have received a 2nd or 3rd rounder. They either REALLY want to bring back Strome (a mistake IMO) or REALLY want to bring back Fast or they want to go UFA shopping. This is just a huge mistake for them. And before half the board continues to spend that money, keep in mind that the money from those three contracts that expire next year (Staal/Smith/Henrik) is already spent, assuming you want to keep guys like Zibanejad, Kakko, ADA, Fox, Shesterkin, etc. The team has four expensive contracts (Trouba, Zib, Panarin, Kreider). If we want to keep the kids the team is developing, it's not a great idea to go out and add more. The cap is going to be flat for a while.

Got it, ok. Circumstances are definitely there, and I would love to have both of those guys. But I can't actually see anything like that happening, especially with us.

Now - who's on the short list of LHD to make the opening night roster?

I know Staal has not been good for a long while now. But I really never excepted him to go anywhere else. I thought he would have finished this last season and retired. It’s a shame his brother f***ed his career like that.

If you're talking about internal options, it's Hajek, Miller, and Reunanen. IMO, in that order. Some would say Robertson, but while I liked his season (particularly as it wore on), I don't think he's ready for prime time. He's 2+ years out.

Rykov would potentially be an option as well, but I'm not sold that he wants to come back, or that he'd even be able to come back until his season is over (when the NHL season is likely 3 months old or more).

Thanks for your service Marc. Every coach he played for loved him. He outgrew his usefulness and the era of a one way defenseman has been gone for awhile. He sustained some big time injuries while wearing the jersey. God speed.

Lindgren

They probably have something BIG brewing for this season I imagine. Why else waste the pick? We are not winning without adding a few pieces and Staal’s contract up in a year.

nervous...exciting times ahead.
Or maybe it’s something more obvious like making room from ADA/Strome/Fast extension and /or keeping Hank for another year.

Yeah sorry, I didn't fully understand the post, I was just talking about guys who could potentially be in line to fill in that vacancy.

I would guess Lindgren, Smith, and Hajek. Based on what we have now. I think if there's room we'll absolutely look to acquire a veteran LHD in the sub-$2M range, as well.

Lindgren is like my goddamn son. LOL.

Assuming Detroit buys Staal out, they will have paid $2M cash for a second round pick. $3M if they are responsible for his bonus.

I’m just catching up on this. Wow I mean I’m shocked. I thought Smith was tradeable. I did not think Staal. Was. We have 2 3rds in 2021 and multiple 4ths too. We could get back in. We may even move someone for a 2021 second.

but it’s still a second round pick so to give it away when you didn’t really need to move Staal this year has me intrigued at what this might mean.

we definitely are a better team today by subtraction. Hank leaving next will solidify that
