What is this move the precursor for though?

They had enough money to keep the group together BEFORE moving the Staalbatross.
Don't wanna ruin the night but potentially they extend Strome now.

Then again, that may not be the worst thing in the world at a few million. Chicago won the Cup with Handzus and Richards at 2C.

Very surprising, but pleasantly. Always hate giving away a pick, especially with just one year left on the deal, but I presume this means there are more positive, surprising moves coming. Re-signing DeAngelo long term for example, or keeping Hank and trading Georgiev.

Full props to Staal for waiving to a team where he will have to endure even more losing (after riding out the worst part of a tear down here), in a career where he has never won but deserved to, and a salute for many years of good service before his body gave out.

McIlrath was a regular for DRW this year no? That supports your POV entirely.

He was not. He was a regular in Grand Rapids playing on the bottom pair there. But when he was given a brief call up he was still better than the others I listed. That’s saying something.

You didn’t see Trevor Daley, Dennis Cholowski, Madison Bowery or Jon Erickssson last season as much as we did. Anyone is an upgrade over them. 57 year old Chelios is better than that group.
He will fit right in with that group. That's the caliber of player he is at this point. He's no longer an NHL defenseman.

I don't think this is Strome related. Its been articulated that they want to go short term with him.

Are there any LD available who have a pretty big ticket?

Don't know what specific moves may be aligned with this deal, but it certainly seems like something that was done knowing that there were specific next steps to come on all sides (NYR, DET, Staal).

Yeah doesn’t seem like you buy that space unless you really need it for something unexpected... and I don’t think they did need the space if they were simply gonna but out Hank and play the rest of the offseason safe.

I think the uncertainty of lower level hockey contributes here. Is a second rounder next year expensive with so many kids not playing their seasons? It's going to be the biggest shit show ever at the draft in 2021. Look for an awful lot of undrafted free agents to go on to have significant careers.
