Bittersweet because Staal has been a Ranger since 2005 and he seems like a great guy off the ice, but man, he sucked. He's been absolutely awful ever since the injury by his older brother.

But Staal is a warrior. That eye injury could've ended many careers.
He was in another world amazing before the eye injury. I’ll never forget what I was doing when it happened. A great shutdown defenseman. It’s a shame. Thanks, Marc.

Detroit fan here. Even with how he's played the last couple of seasons he's an upgrade over most of what we have, so we're glad to take him. Good vet, and everything I've read he seems like a good guy off the ice too. We're glad to take him off your hands.

Also, if you want to throw us a 3rd rounder we'd take Brendan Smith back as well. :naughty:
Send the paperwork.

Marc was never the same after the eye injury, but he was an absolute warrior for the team and played through injuries in our deep playoff runs.

It's bittersweet as others have said. He had a lot of hype coming up. Could do it all, but the offense never came. The last 4 years have been painful with him on the ice.

Hopefully Detroit plans on buying him out. I don't think he should be on that team. Should be a Marleau like situation. Let him go play wherever he wants to.

There are legit spots open on LD. Lindren is the only player that has a spot. Lots of opportunities for Hajek, Miller, Reunanen, and others.

We trashed on Staal a lot, and it was warranted, but he gave his all, even when it was clear he had nothing left.

Marc had to waive his NMC, so he did the Rangers a favor here. They probably came to him and said "Hey, we're going to buy you out. That's the reality. But can you waive your NMC so Detroit buys you out instead and gets stuck with the cap hit?"

This is going to be a crazy "off-season" league wide. I don't hate moving a 2nd round pick to get rid of $5.7M in cap space. We're going to see a lot of moves like this - paying another team to take a bad contract. We could see teams paying a 1st round pick to move such a contract, like Toronto did last year moving Marleau to Carolina. I think Gorton did very well here.

Ready for the Staal buyout and then signs a 1 year deal with the Rangers at the veteran minimum?

Are you sure you know what he has looked like the past couple years? I'm one of his "defenders" here and even I readily admit he has to be one of the two or three worst defenseman in the league to take a regular shift.

Brendan Smith is light years better than Marc Staal at this point. I mean, Marc Staal is absolutely horrendous. I wanted to buy him out, and then keep Lundqvist/trade Georgiev. I wanted to keep the over the hill $8.5M goalie and trade the promising young goalie just so we could be rid of him because he was such a drag on whoever he played with.

No he isn't. Trust me when I say this, you literally just picked up the worst regular D in the league. His numbers away from DeAngelo were LOL worthy.

But he is a good guy off the ice and the room seemed to love him.

You didn’t see Trevor Daley, Dennis Cholowski, Madison Bowery or Jon Erickssson last season as much as we did. Anyone is an upgrade over them. 57 year old Chelios is better than that group.

McIlrath was a regular for DRW this year no? That supports your POV entirely.
