I honestly feel like that first one is pretty bad for us.
I would like to see bennett make his way into the deal, but lindholm's contract is so damn good I think it elevates his value to make such a deal work. I guess the biggest question is how you value ada, but I guess this works for me if it happens.

It's a lot of the names and pieces edge has mentioned in the past week as well between these two teams. Who knows though.

No, we really couldn't wait one more year.

I mean we could have, if we didnt trade for Trouba and sign for Panarin, the latter which completely obliterated our timeline and effectively ended the rebuild and now we must contend during Panarin's prime.

It is no coincidence we traded away Miller and Hayes pre-Panarin and kept Kreider.

Panarin's prime extends well beyond next season. And it's still unlikely we are contending next season. JD said it himself, the moves we make now are with an eye on the future. They are looking at the next 5 years...not just next season. Nothing was obliterated. They still have a timeline.

The Fox deal I think helped to open all that up. Carolina was between a rock and a hard place with the Rangers who gave them a couple 2nd rounders for a guy who was a 3rd rounder. Rangers didn't take advantage.
dealing in good faith and with that level of integrity definitely helps you down the road, especially when dealing within a small group of people. It's really easy to alienate some of them by trying to play your hand too hard and squeeze them. Some people don't understand that, but it's part of why I love Gorton as a GM

I was just looking up his contact. 4 more years at under 5M per. That's solid.

And this newly discovered cap space will have implications beyond next season too, if it was the difference between being able to keep DeAngelo or not. They clearly have big plans for this $5.7 million.

I'm sure they do. Perhaps it's to add another young player who will be part of the core moving forward.

That's where the incredible value is. and with the number of young kids we have coming off ELCs during those years that kind of contract is invaluable to a team like the rangers. That's why you can pay maybe a little more than you're comfortable with for that kind of player with that kind of contract long-term

Shocking move, but I am ok with it. One of my favorite memories of Staal was during the 2008 playoffs when he scored a huge goal against the Devils. Beyond that Staal was a warrior and leader for this team. With Staal being traded the black and blue era of the Rangers has truly come to an end.

Black and blue is endearing. This time we'll be looking to win with talent.

Agreed. We should be making a couple good runs in that time frame. Hopefully by then the new TV deal will lead to some movement in the cap.

Two things. One, Gorton means business. Two, I think this is kind of dumb. I’m not going to cry about giving up a 2nd, but we really couldn’t wait one more year? It’s not like we have a ton of LHD depth. Also, wasn’t the plan to really begin to compete after Staal’s, Smith’s, and Hank’s contracts expire at the same time? Giving up assets shouldn’t have been the way to go, but then again, cap space is valuable these days with the flat cap.

Your best chance at winning is when you have good talent on ELCs. We have Kakko, Fox, Laf, and Igor all on ELCs. If we dont put these players in a position to win soon, its gonna be even more difficult when we have to pay them all in a couple years. We have tons of assets, we can easily recoup this 2nd elsewhere if needed, trading a 2nd next year in not very deep class is a small price to pay to have this team turn the corner a year earlier.

yep this move can officially kill any offer sheet talks. they were never going to happen but the talks can now stop too

Only thing I can think of is the "future considerations" could mean another trade later of minute assets -- for instance, maybe the rangers get a super high 2nd, and then they trade that 2nd for their own 2nd

Interesting...

Only thing I can think of is that weird mess of both Staal and Girardis contracts where nobody could quite figure out what the clauses were for the last 3 years.... Remember when brooks came out and was like "Girardis last 3 years don't have an NMC" and it turned out to be sort of true but mostly false?

I agree. I hope that's the case. One way or another we need to figure out the C situation. I think today's deal makes that a possibility sooner than anticipated.
Agreed....seems to me Gorts had no intention of going into next season without some improvement in the C spot.
