At least one of K’Andre, Reunanen or Robertson will like see a number of games next season. Even if another LD is brought over, they will need to outplay Smith and / or take a spot if ANY side defenseman gets injured.
I like Robertson .. but, as someone stated above, I think he's a year or two away.

In before the "hate Trouba" crowd suggests the NMC for the first 4 years of his contract might actually have an unreported partial NTC.

Pure speculation on my part... But my guess is that Staal had a limited no trade clause... And the clause was probably something he didn't want public... Something like "not Canada."

Which jives with what Yzerman was saying about it not applying.
Everything I've read says he had a full NMC.

Calgary is at 19 and Rangers are at 22. 21 and 20 are New Jersey and Columbus. What player would we move up for that we would be afraid of either of those teams taking? For instance, I think we would be keen to move up for Holloway, but I don't think either NJ or CBJ would have interest in drafting a Center.

Two things. One, Gorton means business. Two, I think this is kind of dumb. I’m not going to cry about giving up a 2nd, but we really couldn’t wait one more year? It’s not like we have a ton of LHD depth. Also, wasn’t the plan to really begin to compete after Staal’s, Smith’s, and Hank’s contracts expire at the same time? Giving up assets shouldn’t have been the way to go, but then again, cap space is valuable these days with the flat cap.

Stevie Y sure likes acquiring Rangers defensemen. He has now traded for or signed McDonagh, Girardi, Stralman and Staal. 2/3 of the Rangers D from 2014.
When asked about this, I recall him saying he thought they were good players.

No doubt. But you deal Strome and you better be comfortable with Chytil at C or be dealing for one. Don't see Barron or Henricksson as top 6 players this season, if ever.
Unless it's a reasonable one-year deal, Strome is a goner....no way he gets multi with term.

I agree. But if doing this deal allows Gorton to deal for a young C now then it's a move for the future.

This move signals that they're serious about being a better team next year.

What they do with the open space? Who knows, but getting a league average defenseman in place of Staal would be a substantial upgrade.

They gave up all of their cap flexibility by signing Panarin/Trouba/Kreider in the last year and then regained some of it by moving Skjei and Staal. I'd much rather have the breathing room now as after this year, things will open up a bit.

I agree. I hope that's the case. One way or another we need to figure out the C situation. I think today's deal makes that a possibility sooner than anticipated.

I should have mentioned Robertson as well but I think it's K'Andre's job to take. Would not be surprised though if the Rangers dealt for a vet LD. Right now all they have is Brendan Smith in that department.

Maybe the pick swap alluded to wasn't necessarily of 1st round picks. I could see 22 going for 49 to offset player value. In the event Calgary is keen on Buchnevich and the Rangers are keen on Lindholm, you'll need to see more added from the Rangers' side of things.

I really don't think this has anything to do with Henrik. I think Henrik will be a goner too. Maybe Alex as well.
I agree, if anything I think this makes it less likely henke is here. NYR just spend a 2nd rounder to open cap room to make improvements for the coming season rather than just wait a year for staal's deal to expire. They value major improvement this season. Makes me believe they want additional room for more options and improvements this year rather than waiting an extra year on henke's deal as well

Well let’s look at Carolina in that manner for a moment.

They’d discussed a number of players, but connected on Keane-Gauthier and Skjei-pick only six days apart.

And that doesn’t take into account conversations about Georgiev, Fast and a brief chat about Kreider that didn’t get too far.

The Fox deal I think helped to open all that up. Carolina was between a rock and a hard place with the Rangers who gave them a couple 2nd rounders for a guy who was a 3rd rounder. Rangers didn't take advantage.

No, we really couldn't wait one more year.

I mean we could have, if we didnt trade for Trouba and sign Panarin, the latter which completely obliterated our timeline and effectively ended the rebuild and now we must contend during Panarin's prime.

It is no coincidence we traded away Miller and Hayes pre-Panarin, but kept Kreider.

Up until very recently (like last year drafting Robertson and Henriksson), this regime has blown through every 2nd round pick they ever had anyway.

Lindbom, Gropp, Halverson, Nieves, Thomas.

Based on that track record, this pick was put to much better use by clearing desperately needed cap space.

From our own mock Calgary takes Zary at 19. New Jersey--Gunler at 20. Columbus--Amirov at 21 and then we take Bourque at 22 leaving Greig, Reichel, Khushnutdinov on the table. Would I move the 22 Bourque + Georgiev for any of Zary, Gunler or Amirov? No. Amirov's the one I like best of that group but I don't like him that much. If the deal expanded and we got a better return then there's a possibility. But I don't see a big difference in the quality of players drafted from 19 to 22 in our mock.
