If a deal is to be made with Ottawa it better include Artie. Rangers loved him when he was here and was reluctant to trade him. JD loved him in Columbus. Only a one year commitment. Ottawa can easily eat half his cap money for this season.

I'm sure gorton laid out the options for him...

refuse to waive NTC:
your $3.2 mil salary at buyout (66%) + ~.08% ny state income tax rate effectively becomes $1.95 mil salary (granted over two years)

waive your NTC to Detroit:
keep your 3.2 mil salary, lowered MI tax rate goes down to ~4%, effectively becomes $3.07 mil salary

he basically decided to swallow his pride to earn an extra $1.1 mil to waive his NTC and keep playing out his deal on a team that will play him nightly

It's not a bad place to finish your career. But that's if they don't buy him out. He'll be valued at the deadline. Could get a 3rd easily for DET.

DET needs bodies.

I'm not an analytics guy (my math is awful), but I remember a couple of that crowd pointing out some pretty significant issues in his game. Bottom line is that he goes balls to the wall and brings a physical edge that we haven't seen in a young blueliner since Kloucek. But he's playing a little over his head, and his style of play doesn't generally lend itself to long careers. I love the kid. He's a shot in the arm for this team's energy level, and you can see his teammates feed off of his energy. I just don't see him as a 2nd pair guy on a contender. He's like a more physical, less skilled Mike Sauer. GREAT guy to have, and probably our best LD right now, but if he's still on the 1st or 2nd pair in two years, either something went REALLY right with him, or something went REALLY wrong with the roster building.

We’ve seen plenty of not top pair guys playing there because of the way a particular defensive corp is build, so I could definitely can see Lindgren in our top-4 down the line because of how he supports Fox and the natural chemistry between the two.

However, I do agree with your original sentiment that the Rangers should clearly be able to “absorb” an import top pair or second pair D.

If the Rangers can work their will on a few different fronts, you might have subsequent deals where they free-up salary and try not to take too much back on.

You’re probably looking at Miller/Reunanen/Hajek - assuming the latter isn’t traded.

Right now there is a lot of uncertainty as to whether Rykov will be back next season.

Right on. We are already better with one of those guys coming in full time.

He wouldn’t have to pay NY taxes if he moved somewhere else.

What would Lindholm cost?

Who knows. But there's been some info in the past that Calgary likes Buch. Seems possible Tony would be also on the table.

I'm completely talking out of my ass, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something like Hanifin+Lindholm for Buch+ADA as a base.

Don’t rule out the possibility of swapping draft picks with Calgary as well.

Interesting. Well Staal was a good Ranger. The head injuries kind of f***ed him over. Detroit though? I guess it's closer to Thunder Bay but they're pretty bad.

I think the Rangers were impressed with K'Andre Miller in the camp. I've had the idea since then they think he can make the team.

At least one of K’Andre, Reunanen or Robertson will like see a number of games next season. Even if another LD is brought over, they will need to outplay Smith and / or take a spot if ANY side defenseman gets injured.

Staal didn't have a reported NTC for the entire deal, so him having to waive a supposed NTC for this trade is news to...well...everyone. Including the normal NHL folks.

Nope. Yzerman sees him as a mainstay.

I stand corrected then, just surprised that the comment that the no move clause didn't come into play. Maybe NYR did tell him they were going to buy him out and give him the option of waving the clause or taking the buy out, and he chose he still wanted to keep playing

Idk, I could see the things that should go right going right and they still suck.

Lafrenierre is good, Kakko is better, Zibanejad and Panarin keep trucking along, Kreider is Kreider, Chytil is an NHL regular. Those are the things we care about.

All of those coupled with: Strome goes back to being a 4th liner, Fox has a sophomore slump, Zibanejad and Kreider have their annual semi-serious injuries, Howden is still here and is going to play a lot, they still have nobody at LD and Staal doesn't change that, we're still one injury from Joe Puddlebutt taking a regular shift, and things could get real ugly despite the franchise taking a positive step.

Shesterkin having pedestrian season.

Pure speculation on my part... But my guess is that Staal had a limited no trade clause... And the clause was probably something he didn't want public... Something like "not Canada."

Which jives with what Yzerman was saying about it not applying.
