Klefbom is a good fit on paper but dude is made of glass

I’d rather pay extra for like H. Lindholm if we can than trade for Klef
That’s the better Lindholm for our team, but holy hell we’re going to have some problems in 2 years when he and Zbad need new contracts.

Just got rid of our biggest anchor, Fox/Lindgren is a year older, Trouba should be a little more comfortable, we’ll see what happens with Tony.

but realistically we’re like one top4 d away from having a high end top-4. I think a full year of Igor is going to make us realize that goaltending was part of the problem at times as well.

On a contender, Lindgren (who I LOVE as a player) is a 3rd pair D. We need either two 1st/2nd pair LD, or one of ADA/Fox to switch to the left (plus one new LD). We have some kids, but they will almost certainly have growing pains. I figure we have a good two seasons of development (ie: scraping into the playoffs next year, maybe winning a round in 21/22) before the whole roster is ready to compete.

With Staal gone without retention, depending on what happens with Hank I’d actually consider Krug. He’s a top notch two-way defender who would look amazing opposite Trouba, IMO.

Feels totally unrealistic to even mention it, but I also didn’t think we’d be dumping Staal with no salary retainer/coming back, so you never know.
Krug makes no sense if he's not going to be on the 1st unit, which he won't be.

Can't see us making playoffs next season. I think we are 1-2 years away from making some noise.

I disagree on completely on Lindgren. He was a good third pair D last year as a rookie. I think he’s easily a 2nd pair D if his partner is the better player. And when he’s with Fox that’s the case.

hence the need for a trade...and if you weren't aware you are allowed to make trades that aren't for overaged players in a quick fix move.

I am aware but we aren't in a position to be making those trades. Not yet anyways.

So question... If detroit buys him out, can the Rangers sign Staal again for like 1M cap hit? Similar to what the Caps did with Orpik? Or is this considered cap circumvention?

Deep down, these guys are competitors. They probably told him he can stay and get sheltered minutes at best, or be traded and have the chance at a more prominent role.

I mean, sure, the price you’re going to pay for Krug (which is why he’s unrealistic) warrants top unit numbers, but that’s far from being his actual main value. He’s a great two way puck moving ES Dman. May just be my opinion but I think Krug is a really great overall defenseman. Krug to NYR is unrealistic and doesn’t make sense but, it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t gladly take him under other circumstances.

I'm not an analytics guy (my math is awful), but I remember a couple of that crowd pointing out some pretty significant issues in his game. Bottom line is that he goes balls to the wall and brings a physical edge that we haven't seen in a young blueliner since Kloucek. But he's playing a little over his head, and his style of play doesn't generally lend itself to long careers. I love the kid. He's a shot in the arm for this team's energy level, and you can see his teammates feed off of his energy. I just don't see him as a 2nd pair guy on a contender. He's like a more physical, less skilled Mike Sauer. GREAT guy to have, and probably our best LD right now, but if he's still on the 1st or 2nd pair in two years, either something went REALLY right with him, or something went REALLY wrong with the roster building.

Yzerman already said Staal fills a need so he isn't being bought out.

My first reaction as I just saw this, please use the cap space well.

Never love attaching an asset to move out cap hit, yet as long as they don't do dumb stuff with the cap space I get it.
