Nope, they will absolutely get another asset from him. Teams love to stockpile players who have postseason experience, and a lot of teams won't be able to add to what they already have right now because of the flat cap. Hold on to 50% of the hit off an expiring contract for a veteran D who has 100+ playoff games under his belt? More than a few teams would add a 3rd rounder for that.
This was a stupid trade by the Rangers. I'm as fed up with Staal's play as anyone, but who plays the left side? They had Staal, Smith, Lindgren and question marks. Will Hajek lock down a spot? Will Lindgren replicate or improve on his season last year? Will Miller be ready for regular minutes as a rookie (when a year in the AHL would have done him a world of good)? The Rangers aren't contending this year anyway. It would have been better to hold on to Staal and Smith and then offer them both up at 50% retention at the trade deadline (as both are expiring contracts). Instead of paying a 2nd rounder, they might have received a 2nd or 3rd rounder. They either REALLY want to bring back Strome (a mistake IMO) or REALLY want to bring back Fast or they want to go UFA shopping. This is just a huge mistake for them. And before half the board continues to spend that money, keep in mind that the money from those three contracts that expire next year (Staal/Smith/Henrik) is already spent, assuming you want to keep guys like Zibanejad, Kakko, ADA, Fox, Shesterkin, etc. The team has four expensive contracts (Trouba, Zib, Panarin, Kreider). If we want to keep the kids the team is developing, it's not a great idea to go out and add more. The cap is going to be flat for a while.
