I'm assuming he considered Lindgren a lock already.

Between those 3 names, Smith, and whoever else they may bring in between now and then, it'll be a very interesting part of camp to keep an eye on.

I'd love to see Hajek get more comfortable and make the step to become an NHL regular, see what Reunanen looks like with another year under his belt, and allow Miller to get some time in the AHL before making the jump. But we'll have to see how they all look in camp.

With regard to what this means in the bigger picture--I never expected the team to exercise a buyout on Lundqvist. I know it's still a possibility, but I don't expect it. Didn't and don't. I think JD (who I don't love) is the type to place an added emphasis on what a guy has meant to the franchise and "do him right" if you will, even if that's maybe not actually the best decision from a team building standpoint. I know this would also apply to Staal to some degree, but he's not in the same category as Lundqvist--the HOFer, best of his generation, team icon, etc.

Beyond that, getting rid of Staal instead of Lundqvist IS the right play, as I've argued. This opens up the space we need to sign our guys. Staal was no longer NHL caliber, so even if someone like Hajek sucks in the role, there's no drop off, really. If they can find someone else to step in for and play a competent #6 for sub-$2M, that would be a coup.

Removing Staal from the roster is a major addition by subtraction. Now, you move Georgiev (who I like, but likely isn't a "special" player IMO) and pick up an asset or two, and let Lundqvist ride it out. Whatever you may potentially lose in a Lundqvist over Georgiev situation, is outweighed by what you gain in losing Staal (and also by what you acquire for Georgiev, even if it's not a great return).

All along, the right play was keeping Lundqvist and using the buyout on Staal. I didn't anticipate being able to move Staal which makes it even more of a no-brainer.

The only way it gets better is if Lundqvist retires. However, if he doesn't do that, you keep him. No need to add any additional dead money.

Watch Tarmo make it.

I'm all for it, and all the signs are pointing to him getting a serious look. It'll now be up to him to take advantage of the opportunity an earn it.

I didn't think he was good enough last year to make the team, but hopefully with another year of physical maturity under his belt he'll be ready to go this year.

I've said for over a year they should have gone after Bennett. They should easily get a 2nd this year, next, plus Bennett for Buchnevich. Bennett is exactly the type of role player they need. Most of the Rangers role players are super soft.

Gotta think this is a precursor to something else. Could be Fast coming back but could also be a big contract coming in via trade. I just really hope it's not OEL. Whatever that play might be is probably close though. Makes no sense to execute this deal unless you're confident in that other thing coming to fruition.

Sad to see Staal's time as a Ranger end like this but it was time.

For those talking about Sergachev and an offer sheet: This trade takes one of the needed picks off the table for an offer sheet in certain ranges.

Nope, they will absolutely get another asset from him. Teams love to stockpile players who have postseason experience, and a lot of teams won't be able to add to what they already have right now because of the flat cap. Hold on to 50% of the hit off an expiring contract for a veteran D who has 100+ playoff games under his belt? More than a few teams would add a 3rd rounder for that.

This was a stupid trade by the Rangers. I'm as fed up with Staal's play as anyone, but who plays the left side? They had Staal, Smith, Lindgren and question marks. Will Hajek lock down a spot? Will Lindgren replicate or improve on his season last year? Will Miller be ready for regular minutes as a rookie (when a year in the AHL would have done him a world of good)? The Rangers aren't contending this year anyway. It would have been better to hold on to Staal and Smith and then offer them both up at 50% retention at the trade deadline (as both are expiring contracts). Instead of paying a 2nd rounder, they might have received a 2nd or 3rd rounder. They either REALLY want to bring back Strome (a mistake IMO) or REALLY want to bring back Fast or they want to go UFA shopping. This is just a huge mistake for them. And before half the board continues to spend that money, keep in mind that the money from those three contracts that expire next year (Staal/Smith/Henrik) is already spent, assuming you want to keep guys like Zibanejad, Kakko, ADA, Fox, Shesterkin, etc. The team has four expensive contracts (Trouba, Zib, Panarin, Kreider). If we want to keep the kids the team is developing, it's not a great idea to go out and add more. The cap is going to be flat for a while.
It could almost be any LD in professional hockey replacing Staal and it wouldn't be a stupid trade. This was necessary to create cap room and Staal is not NHL caliber.

That's what I would do if I was DET. Rent him out at the deadline.

You get a 2nd, and guess what, another 3rd for taking on salary and a body you need.

Good veteran guy that can show some of the kids around over there in DET.

You make Kakko and Lad better by giving them a better challenge in practice by moving Staal out.

Good deal for everyone.

If DET buys him out, great, that also works.
