the reasoning for this, in case people havnt figured it out already, is that team canada is extremely weak on the left side.
babcock says he prefers to have an even balance of left-shot and right-shot dmen. Playing on your 'wrong' side may give you more one-timer chances, but it really ****s you up defensively, especially with board battles, clearing the puck, and holding the blue-line in the offensive zone.
if you look at the orientation camp roster (*=2010 team):
RD:
Boyle*
Doughty*
Green
Hamonic
Letang
Pietrangelo
Seabrook*
Subban
Weber*
LD:
Alzner
Bouwmeester (played in 2006)
Hamhuis
Keith*
Methot
Phaneuf
Staal
Vlasic
After keith, the left side is fairly 'weak'. Expect canada to take at least 3, if not 4 LD. Methot actually has a decent shot, especially if they end up taking a letang or subban on the right side and need someone to babysit defensively. I'd say it's Methot vs Vlasic vs Staal for the third pairing LD spot. I think vlasic wins in the end, but i could see methot impressing enough in the fall to earn the spot... playing with erik karlsson is very similar to playing with letang or subban.
