Not even an ounce of accountability. What a joke and unsurprisingly Lebrun is just a propogandist not a journalist.
Did you read the article?

"In retrospect, Bergevin thinks he could have done it differently.

“Aho was the right player to give an offer sheet to, but I wish it would have been a different offer sheet,” Bergevin said. “Would I take that back? Yes. But honestly, at the time, we thought we would get the player based on the signing bonuses, which (Tom) Dundon matched. It ended up being a good contract for them.

“Lesson learned, honestly. Lesson learned. If I ever become a GM again, that’s a lesson I can use moving forward if it happens.”

That's literally taking accountability.

Like I get it, Bergevin is not a popular guy around here, probably the by-product of spending 10 years as GM of a team, I for one have mixed feelings about his time in Montreal, but damn having read that article and some of the responses in here, not quite sure why people are so upset. Thought it was a honest interview and sober take on his time as GM here, some good, some bad and a lot of in-between.

For me it's not about accountability, but just a re-affirmation that he never really saw the big-picture/long-term window.

He wanted to balance building with competing, and he kind of reiterated that in a subtle way. But at some point, one of those goals needs to be sacrificed.

A core of Price, Petry, Markov, Subban, Plekanec, Pacioretty, Gallagher, Eller was pretty darn good for that era. They needed to sacrifice picks and prospects to get the offensive hlep they desperately needed. Never happened.

Christ, they had the best goalie in the world supported by three top pairing D-men. Two of which were the best offensive D-men in the league.

In the end, he competed when he should have torn it down, and was trying to build while they should have been competing. That will forever be his legacy.

That said, I am thankful for Cole, Suzuki, Guhle, Arber, Struble, Mailloux, and Monty.

His tenure wasnt all bad he did make some good trades. It was his drafting, player development, coaching hirings and signings he was bad at. A lot of those contracts are still here and hirting the team. Now he said he never traded a 1st round pick, now thats true bit how many of those 1st round picks helped the team? Would have been better to add to the team for a playoff push instead of ott, martinsen, king types. Vanek was a good add but he fluked into that as the isles waited too long. Same with the suzuki trade he fluked into that too pacioretty nixed multiple deals to other clubs. He also wanted glass but vegas countered with suzuki. Id give him a solid C ranking overall.

Your post is 5% positives, 95% negative yet it reads like you found his tenure pretty average.

"C" is very generous. 5% positive for me is the worst grade possible.

Petry's never been a bonafide 1st pairing D. He'd get destroyed defensively while producing as a 1st pairing D. He was a solid #3 for a handful of years.

I can respect that he stands behind his decisions and defends them. I think he genuinely was doing the best he could and was trying to help the team.

But I also disagreed (at the time) and still disagree with many of his decisions, and I'm happy he isn't GMing the Habs anymore. The results speak for themselves, and stating that he didn't leave the franchise in a bad state is a straight up fabrication.

He bragged about not trading first round picks.

Dude, that was your problem. You had Carey Price in net and a horrible offense and you held your first rounders to pick bust after bust.
Aren't you glad we kept the 1st round picks during our competitive window that became a terrible 4th liner, a bust, and a borderline NHL defenceman?

The man's career was saved by Carey Price. He was the worst GM at the worst time and probably cost us at least one cup.

That's all the really needs to be said.
Yep. He had the best goalie, a top 5 defenceman and a top 5 goal scorer in the league. The best deadline adds He made were Vanek and Petry. Solid deals, but he got our best players pretty much 0 help to put them over the top.

During his time as GM:

GF/G: 23rd
PP%: T-29th

Dwight King and Steve Ott, come on down
This is Andreas Martinsen erasure.

I still remember battling it out with posters on Gainey vs Bergevin on my old account. Just when we thought we had it bad Bergevin came in from the top rope
Gainey was fine until his daughter passed. Then he made moves that just made no sense. He built the club that should've won cups in the 2010s. Drafting Carey Price was a gutsy move that paid off in spades.

Being a dad now, I can't imagine how he even stayed with the team. I'd have lost my mind. What a horrible tragedy he endured with that loss. So sad.

Bergevin says Habs owner Geoff Molson approached him with a contract extension right after the team reached the ’21 Cup Final. His contract was expiring a year later.

“I decided that for me, it was best to move forward,” Bergevin said. “Time had come. It was good for both of us to move in a different direction. Geoff was very good, very fair. But I told him, ‘Geoff, I’m going to finish my last year that’s left and then I’m going to move on.’ He was good with that. He understood.”

Carolina GM Don Waddell did reach out to see if a trade could be worked out instead. The rumor at the time was that Bergevin tried to get a young Seth Jarvis back.

“That’s true,” he confirmed.
Ya right Bergy.. you wanted to "move on" from being a GM of one of the top 3 NHL teams of all time? A position you were (and are) woefully unqualified for.. only to accept a legacy position in LA with no input. Ya no.
This guy's ego is so extreme it's embarrassing

It was in the early days of July.. complete insanity.
Gainey went all in on: Gionta, Camalleri and Gomez.. all small players.

When are Habs fans going to learn: small players dont win championships. They never do.. they are only an accessory piece to a championship club

So he gave guys massive and undeserved contracts on his way out, as was rumored. Now confirmed. Thus f***ing the team for years to come.

But Bergevin feels he left Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes decent pieces to rebuild with.

“I never traded a first-round pick when I was there,” Bergevin said. “Not that I wouldn’t, but I didn’t. And you can look at the draft picks I left them. And I’m proud of that. I didn’t put that franchise in a bad spot. People might argue that, but I don’t know where you would argue that.”

MB is a clown

All the bad contracts???
