I like his tools, I think with more time he'll be able to put it together. He's not a dumb player. And he's still a rookie, so this isn't that weird.

It is unfortunate that he can't develop a little more in the AHL but I don't know how much that'll actually affect anything long term.

He has NHL speed and a high hockey IQ. Great at making plays in small areas that turn into nothing due to his slower, low skill linemates. He’s very much a playmaker with a pass first mentality. Would love to see what he could do, setting up Ohgren. Great forechecker although his size is limiting. Wins his share of board battles, though. Defensively responsible with good positioning although his size limits his effectiveness in battles in front of the net. Good on breakouts.

I see him failing to connect on a lot of short passes. Probably still adjusting to the smaller ice and quicker closing times by NHL defenders and still lacking confidence at the NHL Level. His defensive game is very refined for his age.

I do wonder if some AHL time would’ve been good, if only to help him get more confidence. Definitely a good bottom 6 piece already, but you’d like to see a bit more offense eventually

As a C, Marat's responsibilities in the D zone tend to be down low. Hard to get breakaways for any forward, but especially C's in 5 v 5. Most goals in the NHL are in and around traffic, in any event.
