Campbell's numbers on January 14th, a full 3 months and a week after the season started:

18-5-3
2.02 GAA
.935 save%
2nd best keeper in hockey.

I know the monthly breakdown is a bit odd to look at but he was a shoe in as a Vezina nominee if the season ended there. I know he wouldnt be a favorite to win as the Leafs are a far better defensive team than the Rangers but it's promising to know that he has the capability to turn it on and be the man. I wouldnt give up on him yet (and I've been a pretty big critic of his saying this).
completely agree.

Jack is an NHL starter. He's had some unfortunate bounces coupled with poor play that seem to now be taking hold on his reputation. If you look at his entire body of work as our starter from last year onward, he has been really solid.

It's better he struggle in Jan-Feb than in May. We need to support the guy as a fanbase IMO. He's been a warrior for us

That was the most physical I have seen a whole Leaf team play in a very long time. Guys were getting blown out of the crease in goal mouth scrambles, and guys were finishing checks all over the ice O zone D zone. Plus plenty of hustle. WHY they cannot do that on a more regular basis astonishes me. Lastly got to move Nylander in the off season for more defense a solid 2-3 making $5MM or less with term and maybe a draft pick will help the over all team make up.

Jack has all the skills and ability to be a top NHL goalie and carry this team unfortunately i'm not sure that Jack has the mental capabilities that are required.
He is a heart and soul guy that is missing that killer instinct and this is what has plagued him since he was drafted 11th overall.

Not sure that's fair, he's played well for us overall and his career numbers are good, so I don't think he's been "plagued" by anything more than being stuck behind Quick in LA for years. Maybe he has the mental capabilities required and maybe he doesn't, he's going through a rough stretch now but that happens to the best of them. I think after the playoffs this season we'll know better what he's made of and hopefully the answer will be positive.

Missed the game last night.

How did the Rielly-Lyub pairing look?
I personally loved it, Lyub was dishing out some massive hits. Absolutely destroyed Robertson with one and the crowd erupted, we need more of that. Giving him more TOI really helps him show what he does best. We need to add one more big body defender who throws his weight around like that, Muzzin will hopefully be back soon, we'd have

Rielly - Bush
Muzzin - Brodie
Sandin - Lily/Holl/Other

I really really like Lily but he's just not NHL ready, he shows flashes of brilliance but still far too many rookie mistakes. I would like to send him down for the year, or make him the 7th D. Great young player but if we want to be a contender, the mistakes he makes will kill us in the playoffs. Holl has been much better since the start of the season but I'd still like to upgrade and keep Holl as the 7th/8th D. Trade Dermott + and upgrade on D. Lindholm is the best D available but I'd like to get a right shot D-man.

Our goalies have been truly pathetic this year outside of one month of Campbell.

.910 and we're comfortably winning the President's Trophy right now.
To be fair Campbell was great for 3 months and fell apart a week before the all star break.

Liljegren is 100% NHL ready and he showed it again last night when he was slotted into the lineup appropriately. He played a very good game and he and sandin dominate the competition when paired together in 3rd pair minutes

Another thing, while Campbell no doubt played better during the first 3 months, I think it may be some rose coloured glasses on our part to think he played great that whole time. He had a stellar November, but our team sv% every other month is sub .900 and Mrazek was basically unavailable almost all of 2021 so Jack needs to wear some of that

I'm so glad I found these. They've been in the drawer since Sparks' shutout and I forgot how relaxing they are.

I'm trying to understand what all the goalie stats guys are saying about tempering my expectations but I'm so relaxed I can't be bother to understand them.

Feels so good.

Ferraro mentioned something last night that a lot of people overlook when evaluating goalies. Some guys will set the minors on fire only to shit the bed in the show. Others, especially a European pro like Kallgren, may look shaky in the A because the team as a whole is always in a state of turnover, way more so than the NHL, and consistency in where players are, where they shoot from and how often they shoot as opposed to pass isn't there. It throws off timing, making them look worse than they ctually are. But oft times, they get up to the show, and it's much easier to track pucks and jump post to post earlier because the plays and the players are more predictable. Faster and more accurate for sure...but if you can anticipate the play, you can make the stop more times than not. I hope that is the case here. We REALLY need someone in the crease to step up.

Mrazek only made three appearances for the team in 2021 and didn't post a SV% above .900 in a game until January; Campbell's monthly SV% didn't dip below .900 until January.

My point was to say that Campbell’s slide in play began before 2022. His December was as much down as it was up before the pause

Could also be that Kallgren played behind a tire fire that is the Marlies defensive structure and going from that to what the Leafs bring defensively is going to help him out a lot.

Same thing happened with Woll. It is no surprise that he looks a lot better on the Leafs than on the Marlies.

We gave up some nice scoring chances, but didn't really give up too many nice 2nd chances. So as long as Kallgren could bail us out the first time, he didn't need to do it the second time.

We don't we are 26-14-2 without Matthews.

Good teams fan bases always have this odd fascination with how many games they win with their best or second best player out of the lineup. Like it suddenly makes them expendable or something (not saying anyone here is saying that specifically)

It’s like the Pens. It constantly came up how good their record was without Crosby. And sure they won a bunch of games without him over the years, but they don’t win any of those 3 cups without him and that’s what really matters
