With much respect to Kallgren that was 2nd best Leafs defensive game I have seen this year, closely behind Minny game .. and I only say that cause Stars have no speed to attack our D .. this is type of game we need to play to close out season and get ready for playoffs .. da team really benefitted from Lub and Cliffy as they were imposing their physical will over Stars and it affected that game a lot .. best game of year for Lub .. not sure he can play like that every night but if he can then it will really help out team .. you need to have a D or two where other teams forwards don't want to go down their side of ice and don't want to go to dirty areas around net .. it changes da game massively .. and Cliffy was running around and it changed d way Dallas D moved da puck .. and what a difference it makes when your tender makes all da normal saves .. when we play a faster more physical team in Canes on St Paddys Day then they will get more rush and forecheck chances around net and we will see if he can handle tougher chances .. but for now it was a HUGE improvement to have a tender who makes normal saves .. glg

What are you on about?
Dallas didn't have a shot on goal in the last 6 minutes of the game.
According to the game log the leafs blocked one just before the Soup goal as well.

.... Are you sure you're watching the right game?
Not sure who keeps these stats but made some saves, and who the heck is Soup. Campbell didn't play or score.

I don't know what to tell you. This is all on the game sheet on the NHL website. Leafs actually blocked 2 shots in the last 3:30 and didn't allow a single shot in the last 6 minutes.

The boys got Kall the shutty

i don’t post to make you feel good
Lol I don't need anyone to post something to make me feel good. I just find some peoples negativity towards things astounding. I just wouldn't be able to get rthrough life with your attitude,

He still had to stop 35 shots and some really good scoring chances up to that point though.

Couple other notes I thought were worth mentioning as well.

Micheyev- Kampf- Engvall line was outstanding once again. I have been critical of Pierre in the past for not having the highest Hockey IQ, and he has really taken his game to the next level this year. That line absolutely neutralized the only offensive threat on the Stars (Pavelski and Robertson). In fact I would be shocked if they did not command the xGF when on the ice against them. They were outstanding. Also Micheyev is just such a good/smart hockey player. I really don't know if he intends to resign with us, but I will really miss him if he goes elsewhere next year. We have guys that can backfill his role in Steeves, Holmberg, Robertson...etc, but his defensive anticipation and speed will be very much missed if he signs elsewhere. I absolutely love that makeup of that line. There are no easy minutes.

Also I think we need to give Holl some credit for his play lately. This was a dude that was so high on the shit list just weeks ago, and he has really responded nicely to the HS a handful of weeks back. He's been really good IMO.

Our goalies have been truly pathetic this year outside of one month of Campbell.

.910 and we're comfortably winning the President's Trophy right now.
Campbell's numbers on January 14th, a full 3 months and a week after the season started:

18-5-3
2.02 GAA
.935 save%
2nd best keeper in hockey.

I know the monthly breakdown is a bit odd to look at but he was a shoe in as a Vezina nominee if the season ended there. I know he wouldnt be a favorite to win as the Leafs are a far better defensive team than the Rangers but it's promising to know that he has the capability to turn it on and be the man. I wouldnt give up on him yet (and I've been a pretty big critic of his saying this).

It'll be really nice to have a line we can trust and throw out there vs Kuch/Point or Barkov/Huberdeau when we play at home to open up our top 2 lines.

The Leafs had the third-best goals against in the league in mid January, and thats with Mrazek being a poor backup. It sucks Campbell fell off (he was never really proven as a workhorse) but the backhanded shot at the Leafs D, who have been playing 2 rookies in prominent roles, is a little unfair.

Leafs last 9 losses on Moneypucks "deserve to win" meter since goaltending became an issue in mid January:

Buffalo: Leafs 70% expected to win
Arizona: Leafs 85% expected to win
Canucks: 50/50 expected to win
Buffalo: Buffalo 60% expected to win
Columbus: Leafs 60% expected to win
Habs: 60% Habs expected to win
Canucks: Leafs 80% expected to win
Flames: Flames 55% expected to win
Rangers: Leafs 65% expected to win

There are some stinkers in there (every team has them) but overall it's been the Leafs getting let down by goalkeeping.

Even the wins have been marred with bad goalkeeping as the Leafs managed to outscore their issues but being charitable, I think goaltending has cost the team 6-10 points in the standings since that date meaning we would probably be looking at a fun presidents trophy race with this team with even average goaltending IMO.

I mean, you have to REALLY work hard to say the Leafs haven't been a good defensive team under Keefe.

Top 10 teams for xGA since Keefe took over:

1. Bruins
2. Avs
2. Bolts
4. Wild
5. Leafs
5. Stars
7. Flames
7. Pens
9. Isles
10. Knights

XGA works really well over bigger samples and shows just how great they have been. I don't think anyone would disagree the other teams have been good in that area so we end up with the question.....are the stats just wrong only about the Leafs or has goaltending been the issue? I think I know the answer to that as Ive watched a whole series of games get blown by goaltending. It's the missing ingredient for the team and has been the whole time.

That big game goalie....that Belfour/Potvin/Cujo......

Im still interested in what a guy like Varlamov could do if they wanted to have a run with him. If I were a top end goalie out there, I would be salivating at the prospect of joining a team whose main weakness seems to be lack of a quality keeper. Can go again with Campbell of course but he seems to be more of a 1b guy than the stud they need..he may surprise me though.

Mrazek probably needs to go now though. The guy is scary in there but seeing what Dubas did with Ritchie, maybe you can find a partner that thinks Mrazek is actually the victim of poor team D. Enough people around here seem to think its the problem so who knows?

Missed the game last night.

How did the Rielly-Lyub pairing look?
Outstanding IMO.

All the pairings looked great. Brodie playing the left side with Holl seems to be a pairing that we could lean on as well. It's a bit early to tell if Lybushkin can keep up that level of play with 19-20 mins a night consistently, but he has been rock solid since we acquired him. Last night was just another example of what he is capable of IMO. He's played big minutes before, no reason to think he can't with us. He's a perfect example of a player playing within his skillset. He doesn't f*** around with soft dishes, it's hard D to D or off the glass and out. He's a physical force out there as well. I love it.

By all accounts it sounds like they'll be running these same pairings against Carolina on Thursday, so that will be a great test for him.

The Russian bear also decapitated Jason Robertson last night on an open ice hit from a d-man that we've not seen for a long ass time. So he really is playing to his audience in TOR

Incoming shutout against a goaltender in his first NHL game.

Also expecting a hattie from RoboJR.
Rookie goalie making NHL debut, we about to get shutout. While razor cries how the game was stolen by great goaltending, despite that we only get 2 legitimate scoring chances all games as is the way

Yup this is pretty well how I see it as well. Defensively we need to work out boxing guys out at the top of the crease and limiting our turnovers in neutral ice. But when you cannot get a save, the team is forced to play outside of their system. We started the AZ game down 2-0 within minutes of the puck drop, and yet we are supposed to expect this team to stay patient? How could you? You know you're going to need 5 to win the game at that point.

IMO, I think a ton was made about Jack Campbell's very early struggles to start 2022. I remember vividly the game where he let in 5 against COL, and the broadcast was already starting the narrative of there being a goalie problem. Yet that COL game we get blown out if Jack is not in the pipes. The next game I believe was Vegas, where he almost cost us the W, and then again in STL he had a legit stinker. The team bailed him out those 2 games for the first time ever, and then the "goalie issues" became the main talking point. From that point on Jack has struggled to gain some traction. But this is a dude that was an All-Star for a reason. He was arguably our MVP from the last half of last season to pre-COVID pause in December 2021. I am not going to bet against Campbell. He's a battler, and a great goalie. He will be fine, he's just needs to work through this. And he will
